Housing Values of Adult Children and their Parents. Is the Quality of Housing Transmitted between Generations
This paper investigates to what extent the value of housing is transmitted from one generation to the next. Using the Social Statistical dataBase (SSB) for the Netherlands in 2003 and OLS regression analysis, it is found that the value of the parents' home is an important predictor of housing value. Even after controlling for the fact that parents and children might operate in the same housing market, and parental characteristics such as income, …
Distance to parents and geographical mobility
We investigate the likelihood of moving and the direction of moves with respect to the residential location of the parents, using rich administrative data for the Netherlands. We address the question of to what extent events and situations associated with increases in the need for support or contact between parents and adult children influence these moves. The results suggest that adult children take into account the residential location of their…
Family Events and the Residential Mobility of Couples
Using data from retrospective surveys carried out in the Netherlands during the early 1990s, we describe how the residential mobility of couples-that is, short-distance moves-is affected by family events and how fertility is affected by residential mobility. The results show that residential moves are particularly likely to happen in a short period preceding a wedding or during pregnancy, supporting the hypothesis that residential mobility is lik…
Geographical distances between adult children and their parents in the Netherlands
We investigate the determinants of geographical distances to parents. We focus on the role of family members who live outside the household (the parents themselves, and siblings), and on the distinction between the effects of life events and effects re
Lowest low fertility in an urban context: The role of migration in Turin, Italy
In countries with so‐called ‘lowest‐low’ fertility, the lowest fertility levels are seen in the cities. The main reason for this is the difference in the cost of living, combined with income constraints in cities, compared with rural areas. If we focus our attention on the centre of an urban area, migration needs to be taken into account, since migrants may have particularly low fertility levels. In this paper we use the Turin Longitudinal Study,…
Political Economy and Life Course Patterns: The Heterogeneity of Occupational, Family and Household Trajectories of Young Spaniards
We explore the strong linkages between macro changes and the dynamics of educational, occupational, family, and residential careers of young Spanish adults born between 1945 and 1974. We review theory and evidence on macro factors: changes in the welfa
Political economy and life course patterns: The heterogeneity of occupational, family and household trajectories of young spaniards
We explore the strong linkages between macro changes and the dynamics of educational, occupational, family, and residential careers of young Spanish adults born between 1945 and 1974. We review theory and evidence on macro factors: changes in the welfare system, centrality of the family as a service provider, and the changing role of women. We outline some hypotheses of how life course trajectories, and their heterogeneity, change across cohorts.…
