Job satisfaction of foreign-born women employed in personal care and household services
Using the ad hoc module of the 2021 Italian Labour Force Survey, this study provides a nuanced and comparative analysis of job satisfaction among foreign-born women employed in Personal care and Household Services (PHS). Regression models show that foreign-born women employed in PHS do not report lower levels of job satisfaction than their native counterpart. Work-related characteristics associated with job satisfaction, however, differ between t…
Mapping social risk areas to floods in Southern Italy
Hazards develop into disasters when natural events impact on structures, infrastructure, and populations. Since both the physical and social components of disasters are influenced by spatial and temporal factors, understanding the interaction between natural hazards and the socioeconomic environment at the local scale remains a key challenge in disaster studies. In this paper, a multidimensional approach that merges population exposure, social vu…
Migration and Short‐Term Fertility Intentions in Contexts of Socioeconomic and Political Crises an Origin (Albania)–Destination (Italy) Perspective
This article analyses women's intentions to have a(nother) child from an origin‐destination perspective, comparing the fertility intentions of Albanian migrants in Italy to those of non‐migrants in Albania, a country facing complex historical, socioeconomic, institutional and political challenges on its path toward European integration. This comparison tests both selection and socialisation hypotheses. Additionally, the short‐term fertility inten…
Aging well in an aging society
Leveraging Italy's unique demographic profile and internal heterogeneity, Age-It promotes sustainable aging by harnessing the opportunities embedded in demographic change. The program ranges from the biology of aging to mental and physical health prevention, long-term care, labor market dynamics, and social participation-ultimately aiming to reshape how aging is perceived and managed in aging societies
Positive demography
A positive demography agenda extends beyond addressing aging-related needs; it requires investments in younger generations to help them prepare for long and fulfilling lives. Achieving this vision necessitates interdisciplinary collaboration, innovation in data collection, and a methodological shift from forecasting to backcasting-identifying present actions necessary to shape a desirable demographic future
In search of divided spaces
Divided cities are blended cities. Often, if the social fabric is divided, so too is the urban space. Such a division is frequently associated with socio-economic polarization, fuelling spatial segregation of the most fragile population. The latest studies on this subject found a clear North–South hierarchy of urban areas in Europe, within a context of increasing multiculturalism and socio-economic inequalities. It has been reported that southern…
Is the Combination of the Nationalities of the Couple Affecting Women’s Fertility Intentions? Insights from Italy
Literature on migrants’ fertility intentions has grown significantly in recent years. However, to the best of our knowledge, none of these studies has investigated the role that the combination of partners’ nationalities may play in individual’s intentions to have a(another) child. Filling this gap is particularly relevant for research because fertility behaviors tend to vary greatly according to the type of couple and fertility intentions have b…
Natives’ and immigrants’ fertility intentions in Europe
In several European countries, births to immigrant women represent more than 10% of all births [Sobotka 2008]; however, there is evidence showing that in the aftermath of the Great Recession migrants’ fertility might have fallen more pronouncedly among migrants than natives [Sobotka 2017].With this study, we aim to provide further evidence about the employment/fertility link among migrants by focusing on the relationship between employment and fe…
Demographic trends in less and least developed countries
Many scholars share the assumption that demographic patterns in the world are converging over time. The present study analyses the temporal trends of specific parameters of mortality and fertility—together with certain socio-economic indicators—in 95 less and least developed countries during the period 1990–2015 and discusses whether mortality and fertility trends are convergent or divergent. We apply dynamic factor analysis and cluster analysis …
Migrants’ Fertility in Italy
Histories of Couple Formation and Migration
Migrant families have become relevant in Italy during the past decade and Lombardy is one of the Italian regions with the largest foreign presence. The aim of the article is to contribute to the international debate on the relationship between couple formation and migration event. Using data from the 2010 ORIM ( Osservatorio Regionale sull'Immigrazione e la Multietnicità) sample survey and event history techniques, we look at the main determinant…
Motherhood of foreign women in Lombardy
The international literature highlights the strong impact of the high risk of childbearing shortly after migration on period fertility, thus establishing a link between reproductive behaviors and migratory transitions

International Married and Unmarried Unions in Italy
As a result of the growing presence of foreign immigrants settling in Italy, recent years have seen a significant increase in the number of mixed unions. However, little research has been carried out on the subject in this country, in part due to insufficient availability of suitable data. The aim of this study is to investigate the “market” of formal and informal mixed unions and to understand whether ethnic origin contributes a new element to t…
Just a Matter of Time? The Ways in Which the Children of Immigrants become Similar (or not) to Italians
In this paper, we study similarities between the children of immigrants and those of Italian parents using data from the Itagen2, a survey of a large sample of pupils, aged 11–13, enrolled in Italian junior high schools in 2006. We measure three different aspects—linguistic abilities, friendship with peers, and sense of belonging in Italy—and investigate the determinants of similarity using multivariate techniques. Our results suggest that the It…
The impact of origin region and internal migration on Italian fertility
We examine the impact of population distribution on fertility in a nationally representative sample. We exploit detailed life-history data to conduct an event-history analysis of transition to first birth, examining mechanisms that might link migration
