The times they are a changing: Negotiating diverse sexualities and masculinities in male rugby union
Research concerning masculinities and homosexuality reveals contradictory findings, with inclusive masculinity theorists uniquely declaring the declining significance of homophobia in sports. To examine these contested findings, we interviewed straight and gay rugby union players to understand how they reflect on issues of homosexuality and negotiate the associated complexities in changing times. Our findings showed signs of greater acceptance of…
Introduction: Contributions and reflections on Modern Heritage in the Anthropocene
Modern Heritage in the Anthropocene draws from a critical selection of the 54 papers presented at the second International MoHoA conference Modern Heritage in the Anthropocene , (October 26–28, 2022), hosted by The Bartlett School of Architecture, University College London, in partnership with the University of Liverpool's School of Architecture. Examining Pride Cups as a health promotion resource to address homophobia in Australian men’s sport
Effective interventions are needed to stop homophobic behaviours in sport settings as these behaviours are associated with negative health and social outcomes for individuals who identify as Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer or other diverse genders and sexualities. This paper reports the results of a quasi-experimental study commissioned by a public health agency to explore the benefits of a novel intervention that has been widely adopt…
Prologue: Locating the Modern
This issue of the Curator is the result of 2 years of intense discussion with colleagues mainly living and working on the African continent in the broad field of heritage studies. Colleagues from other places and institutions, co-hosted by University of Cape Town and The Bartlett School of Architecture at UCL (UK), including various UNESCO agencies, the Getty Conservation Institute, Modern Cities Network have also made immeasurable contributions …
Towards the Cape Town Document
The Modern Heritage of Africa (MoHoA) initiative was conceived at a critical confluence of existential planetary conditions and rising global inequality, exacerbated and accelerated by the Covid‐19 pandemic, the Ukraine ‐Russia war, and a resurgence of racism and extreme nationalism. These phenomena share a common root in being products of the modern age and yet, paradoxically, endanger its legacy through the pursuit of inequitable and unsustaina…
Asmara's architectural heritage as a bricolage: The case of St. Mary's Orthodox Cathedral
Asmara's modernist heritage, adjudged by UNESCO to possess “outstanding value to humanity”, combines the architectural practices of locals and former “colonizers”, and embodies Eritrea's modernist encounters. In 2017 Asmara was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List under Criteria 2 and 4 and remains Africa's only explicitly modernist site. Employing the concept of bricolage to examine some of Asmara's most notable buildings, this paper ques…
Co‐Curating the Cape Town Document on Modern Heritage
The Modern Heritage of Africa [MoHoA] programme was set up to support an equitable and sustainable heritage agenda in Africa and beyond through the research, protection, utilisation, reinterpretation and reconceptualisation of modern heritage and to contribute to improving the implementation of the World Heritage Convention across the African continent and in other areas of under‐representation and historical marginalisation. It was conceptualise…
The Relationship Between ‘Coming Out’ as Lesbian, Gay, or Bisexual and Experiences of Homophobic Behaviour in Youth Team Sports
Introduction Homophobia appears to be greater in sport settings than in others. However, little is known about whether lesbian, gay or bisexual (LGB) young people experience discriminatory behaviour in team sports because of their sexuality and whether coming out to sport teammates is associated with homophobic behaviour. Method This study used a sample ( N = 1173; 15–21 years; collected in 2014–2015) from six countries (United States, United Kin…
Modern Heritage, the Other, and the Anthropocene
The 20th century was modernism’s century; a comparatively fleeting moment in which the human race’s transition to an urbanised species created an entirely new geological epoch: the Anthropocene. The existential challenge for our species in the 21st century will be to transform the modern city into a site of truly sustainable human habitation. This challenge requires us to engage critically with the past in a way that serves the needs of the futur…
Ultra-Modernism: Architecture and Modernity in Manchuria
The first half of the twentieth century was fraught with global tensions and political machinations. However, for all the destruction in that period, these geopolitical conditions in Manchuria cultivated an extraordinary variety of architecture and urban planning, which has completely escaped international attention until now. With over forty carefully chosen images, Ultra-Modernism: Architecture and Modernity in Manchuria is the first book in En…
Building Shanghai: Historical lessons from China’s gateway
Located at one of the key gateways to the world’s most populous country, Shanghai has long enjoyed a neoteric image. Today, as one of the world’s largest and fastest growing cities, this image is dutifully sustained as Shanghai offers unprecedented opportunities for domestic and international architects who have enjoyed considerable commercial success while helping to transform the urban landscape from an ageing, dense and relatively low‐rise set…

A Note on Private Saving
M OST descriptions of the behavior of private saving have dealt separately with net personal saving, net corporate saving, or capital consumption allowances. However, for many analytical purposes, and particularly the appraisal of inflationary or deflationary pressures, it is gross private saving as a whole the sum of these three components -that is crucial, and analysis of the details is of interest mainly in arriving at the implications for thi…
