Affect, Perfume, and Early Modern Sensory Boundaries
Affect, Perfume, and Early Modern Sensory Boundaries Elizabeth D. Harvey (bio) Part 1: The Circuit of Fear In late November 1623 when English poet and Anglican priest John Donne was fifty-one, he developed a life-threatening illness. It may have been typhus, or perhaps relapsing fever, which was sweeping London at the time. The sickness confined him first to his room and then to his bed, where he wrestled with his symptoms and the strong possibil…
Embodied Resonances: Early Modern Science and Tropologies of Connection in Donne’s Anniversaries
We argue in this essay that the phenomenon of resonance structures the formal and metaphoric coherence of John Donne’s Anniversaries , underpinning the poems’ allusions to magnetism, the doctrine of signatures, atomism, and Paracelsian theory. Linking analogy and metonymy through resonance allows Donne to engage emergent scientific discovery, the epistemological upheaval of the early seventeenth century, and the extra-linguistic dimensions of lan…

Obscure imaginings: Visual culture and the anatomy of caves
This article speculates about the theory and practice of visual culture by examining the potent linkages between the figure of the cave and the making of images. Because the cave functions as a signifier for the artistic imperative, an endorsement of art history’s place in cultural representation and also as a mythic beginning point in the Western hegemony of the visual, its figuration carries within it a set of suppositions on which the visual d…
Sensible Flesh: On Touch in Early Modern Culture
This ground-breaking interdisciplinary collection explores the complex, ambiguous, and contradictory sense of touch in early modern culture. If touch is the sense that mediates between the body of the subject and the world, these essays make apparent the frequently disregarded lexicons of tactility that lie behind and beneath early modern discursive constructions of eroticism, knowledge, and art. For the early moderns, touch was the earliest and …

The Gods Made Flesh: Metamorphosis and the Pursuit of Paganism
Although this study takes the idea of corporeal transfomiation as its principal subject, Barkan's investigation is focused on the work that stands "as the clear point of entrance"(l) into the topic, Ovid's Metamorphoses. He offers an illumi- nating reading of this paradigmatic text and then proceeds to explore the way itas a metonym for classical culture -was received, imitated, and transformed by theologians, philosophers, poets, and artists in t…
