  • Building Municipal Trust

    Open Access•Francisco Bastida, Lorenzo Eusebio Estrada-Escoto•ARTICLE•Administration & Society•2025•References: 50

This article examines the extent to which high-quality public services, transparency, and corruption are related to citizens’ trust in Chilean municipal governments. Based on Chilean municipal data from 2008 to 2018, we find that public services quality, corruption and democratic quality have an impact on citizens’ trust on municipal governments. In contrast, municipal transparency is not followed by increasing trust. As practical implications, m…

  • The public purse as a reelection lever

    Lorenzo Eusebio Estrada-Escoto, Francisco Bastida•ARTICLE•Local Government Studies•2023•Cited by: 3•References: 39

Using a sample composed of the 298 Honduran municipalities for the period 2006–2014, we evaluate the impact of budgetary, political and socioeconomic factors on the probability of mayors' re-election. The findings show that mayors who have initiated greater municipal spending are more likely to be re-elected (a $100 increase in real per capita expenditure increases re-election chances by 19.01%). This finding partially supports both public choice…

Para ello se administró un cuestio…

  • Flypaper effect and partisanship theories best explain municipal financial performance in Latin America

    Francisco Bastida, Lorenzo Eusebio Estrada-Escoto et al.•ARTICLE•Policy Studies•2022•References: 51

There is an ongoing debate about the determinants of municipal financial performance around the world, including Central America. This article fills a research gap using data from the 298 Honduran municipalities for 2002–2015. Partisanship theories are found to be the strongest explanatory factor, for leftist governments show greater total municipal spending. Political alignment also has a weak, positive impact on investment spending. The elector…

  • Empirical Determinants of Corruption in Honduran Municipalities

    Francisco Bastida, Lorenzo Eusebio Estrada-Escoto et al.•ARTICLE•Public Integrity•2022•References: 44

This article evaluates municipal bureaucratic corruption in Honduras on a sample of 268 observations of Honduran municipalities surveyed by the Latin-American Public Opinion Poll for 2004–2016. This bureaucratic corruption is measured by officials’ request for a bribe from citizens to get some municipal paperwork done. Financial factors do not impact corruption. Officials could take advantage of citizens’ imperfect information (agency problem) to…

  • Effective Transparency and Institutional Trust in Honduran Municipal Governments

    Open Access•Lorenzo Eusebio Estrada-Escoto, Francisco Bastida•ARTICLE•Administration & Society•2020•Cited by: 6•References: 57

This article investigates trust in Honduran Municipal Governments and shows that transparency and municipal services quality impact on trust. We posit the Theory of Effective Transparency : relevant information should be reported; transparency should be based on unbiased information; and municipal data should be comparable with other municipal governments. Municipalities where one political party has an overall majority are trusted more, and audi…

  • La competencia genérica de reconocimiento y aprecio por la diversidad humana

    Open Access•Carla Leticia Paz-Delgado, Lorenzo Eusebio Estrada-Escoto•ARTICLE•Revista Electrónica Educare•2017•Cited by: 1

Currently, teaching takes place in highly diverse social, educational and cultural environments. Understanding and accepting this fact has allowed that pre-service and in-service teaching training be taught as education for diversity. It is in this sense that the Universidad Pedagógica Nacional Francisco Morazán (UPNFM, Pedagogical University Francisco Morazán) has, in a recent curricular reform, included a generic and transverse competency to co…
