Constructing mobile place: Tales from the run
This article examines the runner’s place construction process. We found that runners became skilled curators of their places, adapting and transforming them. We argue that this represents an embodied, dynamic and recursive mobile place construction, only possible through runners’ movement, questioning the notion of a fixed place. While running alongside participants during their regular runs, we conducted 20 running interviews. Employing a forehe…
The lived experience of class cleansing: Reshaping sense of place in a gentrified neighbourhood
Gentrification is a capitalist urban transformation process whereby working-class residents are progressively replaced by wealthier ones, affecting the people-place bonds of those who manage to stay. In a process known as class cleansing, new cultural codes reshape the urban landscape redefining class identities. Drawing on this argument, we explore everyday class experiences in the gentrified neighbourhood of El Poblenou (Barcelona) conducting a…
What is so good about walking interviews? Expanding the geo-indexical virtues of making meaning on the move
Mobile methods allow unveiling or better grasping often “hidden” aspects of social processes and subjective dimensions of the human experience of place. Specifically, they demand nuanced attention to the geosemiotic, assembled, and intersubjective nature of the units at play when researching social and subjective worlds on the move. Based on the existing literature and empirical work conducted in different contexts by the co-authors of this artic…
Bridging senses of place and mobilities scholarships to inform social-ecological systems governance: A research agenda
Uncertainty and change are increasingly commonplace as communities respond to impacts of social-ecological change including climate change, and dangerous levels of pollution. Given the extent of these crises, new approaches are needed to support responses. Here we identify challenges and discuss insights that the nexus of Senses of place (SoP) and mobilities research offers in navigating such uncertainty. We conducted a two-round Delphi, followed…
Queer terror management theory on trial: An initial test for the effects of death attitudes on gender stereotypes
Interventores/as psicosociales en Chile.
On (national) citizenship and (de)politicised nations: Everyday discourses about the Catalan secessionist movement
This paper examines the Catalan independentist movement understood as a paradigmatic case of secessionist politics in a European context. Drawing on recent rhetorical-psychological studies on citizenship and nationhood, we explore how constructions of citizenship and national identity interweave to shape, warrant, and contest opposing arguments about Catalan independence and Spanish sovereignty. We conducted a discursive-rhetorical analysis of th…
Shaping the healthy subject in gentrified spaces: Two case studies in Barcelona (Spain)
Several studies have analysed the impact of gentrification on health. However, a more in-depth examination of the constitutive role of health discourses in shaping spaces is required. This article explores the links between the gentrification process and the subjectification of healthy subjects through a critical discourse analysis of 35 walking interviews and a visual semiotic analysis of 140 shopfronts. Health is put forth as a super value to j…
The adoption of the neoliberal model and the implementation of the new public management approach in Chile, have led to the implementation of social policies that prioritize quantifiable efficiency and adherence to administrative standards over effective solutions to social problems. This has had a negative impact on the experiences of professionals working in the field of psychosocial intervention, and on the quality of their interventions. Howe…
The Power of Death Valence: A Revised Terror Management Process
Terror management strategies (TMS) are assumed to affect social prejudice. In a prior study, positive death valence in wave 1 reduced gender-related stereotypes in wave 2. Psychosocial intervention against prejudice requires a deeper understanding of the terror management process. We investigated the relationships between death anxiety, death valence, mortality salience and TMS in a mixed method study. Participants showed complex emotions in the …

Living There, Leaving There: Identity, Sociospatial Mobility, and Exclusion in “Stigmatized Neighborhoods
As mobility is increasingly reshaping social relations, understanding how it affects new forms of social exclusion is an important challenge in today's polarized societies. From a political‐psychological perspective, this challenge requires recognition of how identity processes linked to exclusion are significantly shaped by sociospatial mobility practices. Identity, mobility, and exclusion are at the core of the psychological experience of peopl…
Between fixities and flows: Navigating place attachments in an increasingly mobile world
This paper develops a theoretical argument for how place attachments are forged and become dynamically linked to increasingly common mobility practices. First, we argue that mobilities, rather than negating the importance of place, shift our understanding of place and the habitual ways we relate to and bond with places as distinct from a conception of place attachment premised on fixity and stability. Second, we document how the body of research …
Urban studies focused on spatial transformation processes have paid little attention to the emotional relationships between people and their transformed environments. Given its ambiguous definitions and concepts, this phenomenon has not been properly understood. Environmental psychology has thoroughly studied the individual-environment relationship through the analysis of the emotional attachment to a specific place. The present paper describes t…
Public Space in Conflict: Conceptual Coordinates and Ideological Tensions
In this article we provide conceptual and argumentative tools to think and to problematize the notion of “public space”. We start outlining the main discursive frames that are usually used to define “the public space” as a research object in urban studies. Drawing on the neo-Marxist critique to the normative ideal of public space as an ideological standard that mystifies structural social inequalities, we underline the theoretical and political i…

Micropolitics of Public Space: On the Contested Limits of Citizenship as a Locational Practice
This article provides a social-psychological account of how public space dynamics may be consequential for the daily construction of citizenship. The article is organised around three interrelated ideas that are illustrated by a case study. First, it is argued that certain social-psychological processes that are typically involved in the construction of citizenship can be re-conceptualised as place-based processes that are located in public space…
Exploring links between empowerment and community-based arts and cultural practices: Perspectives from Barcelona practitioners
In this paper, we reflect on the development of community-based arts and cultural (CBAC) practices to promote psychosocial, group/organisational and community changes from the perspective of empowerment. We draw on findings from an initial exploratory phase of an ongoing action-research project in Spain about creative tools that empower artists and communities. The study sought to explore community-based art practitioners’ and academic/researches…
More Than Words: Place, Discourse and the Struggle over Public Space in Barcelona
The social construction of human-environment relations is a central concern of an emerging tradition of research on place, which extends the so-called “discursive turn” in social psychology. This research highlights the primary role of everyday linguistic practices in the production of place meanings, challenging the prevailing tendency among environmental psychologists to treat place meanings mainly as an expression of individual cognitions. By …
Displacing xeno-racism: The discursive legitimation of native supremacy through everyday accounts of ‘urban insecurity’
Socio-cultural approaches to fear of crime have suggested that responses to questionnaires may channel broader social attitudes towards other culturally-related topics which also shape the public meaning of ‘crime’, such as immigration. Building on this idea, this article uses a discourse analytic framework to examine how xeno-racist ideas, claims and positions are metonymically worked through everyday opinions about ‘urban insecurity’ as a crime…
Grounding Citizenship: Toward a Political Psychology of Public Space
This article considers the political nature of public space and explores its psychological relevance as a natural arena of citizenship. Drawing on literature in social psychology, environmental psychology, and political geography, the article addresses how common understandings of normative behavior in public are often based on particular constructions of place and people‐space relations. In so doing, it shows how such culturally shared “location…
Rhetorical uses of public space: The discursive organization of a space in conflict
In this paper I explore the discursive use of public space, understood as a rhetorical resource for localized social action. Analysing several extracts of written documents and in-depth interviews, I focus on the rhetorical use of space-formulations and constructions of people-in-place relations by social and institutional agents confronted by the physical definition of a space in conflict. The discursive work includes the rhetorical management o…
