  • Using Systematic Anomalous Case Analysis to Examine Sexual and Reproductive Health Outcomes in the Philippines

    Open Access•Jessica D Gipson, Jasmine Uysal et al.•ARTICLE•Studies in Family Planning•2020•Cited by: 1•References: 39

The Philippines is characterized by sustained economic growth and political stability, yet sexual and reproductive health indicators have stalled or even worsened in recent decades. We employed an innovative, mixed‐methods approach—Systematic Anomalous Case Analysis—to gain insights into these worsening trends by examining sexual and reproductive decision‐making among a cohort of young adults in Metro Cebu, Philippines. We first analyzed longitud…

  • Time-use Profiles, Chronic Role Overload, and Women's Body Weight Trajectories from Middle to Later Life in the Philippines

Open Access•Feinian Chen, Zhiyong Lin et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Health and Social…•2019•Cited by: 3•References: 47

Although chronic life strain is often found to be associated with adverse health outcomes, empirical research is lacking on the health implications of persistent role overload that many women around the world are subject to, the so-called double burden of work and family responsibilities. Using data from the Cebu Longitudinal Health and Nutrition Survey (1994-2012), we examined the linkage between time-use profiles and body mass index (BMI) traje…

  • Double burden for women in mid- and later life: Evidence from time-use profiles in Cebu, the Philippines

    Open Access•Feinian Chen, Luoman Bao et al.•ARTICLE•Ageing and Society•2018•Cited by: 2•References: 38

Using data from the Cebu Longitudinal Health and Nutrition Survey (1994, 1998, 2002, 2005, 2007, 2012), we utilise latent class analysis to develop time-use class membership to characterise the degree to which women in Cebu are subject to the double burden of work and family responsibilities in mid- and later life. Results suggest that close to a third of the sample are engaged in high-intensity work for pay (either outside or home-based), while …

  • The Context of Condom Use Among Young Adults in the Philippines: Implications for HIV Prevention

Marguerite B Lucea, Michelle J Hindin et al.•ARTICLE•Health Care For Women International•2012

We examine current perceptions and constraints surrounding condom use among young adults in the Philippines to garner a deeper contextual understanding of this aspect of HIV prevention within Filipino society. Through thematic analysis of focus group data, we found three broad themes, all of which include societal and individual barriers to using condoms. The findings may provide insight for similar settings in which religion has a strong influen…

  • Old ideals and new realities: The changing context of young people's partnerships in Cebu, Philippines

Jessica D Gipson, Socorro Gultiano et al.•ARTICLE•Culture Health & Sexuality•2012

The Philippines has experienced rapid sociodemographic changes in recent years, with implications for young people. This study combines quantitative and qualitative data from Metro Cebu to assess the timing and predictors of young people's partnerships, as well as the context in which these partnerships are occurring. The majority of young people (54%) had premarital sex, though this pattern varied by gender. Wealthier, urban young men, and women…

  • Cohort Profile: The Cebu Longitudinal Health and Nutrition Survey

    L S Adair, Barry M Popkin et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2011

The Cebu Longitudinal Health and Nutrition Survey (CLHNS) was originally conceptualized as an interdisciplinary study of infant-feeding patterns, particularly the overall sequencing of feeding events (milks and complementary foods), the factors affecting feeding decisions and how feeding patterns affect the infant, mother and household. The idea was to study these topics within as natural a setting as possible and to analyse how infant-feeding de…

  • Family Background, Service Providers, and Early Childhood Development in the Philippines: Proxies and Interactions

Sharon Ghuman, Jere R Behrman et al.•ARTICLE•Economic Development and Cultural…•2005•Cited by: 4•References: 26

We examine the importance of family background for early childhood development (ECD) using data collected in 2001 from 3,556 children ages 0–36 months in three regions of the Philippines. We focus on four main research questions: (1) Are associations of family background with ECD in part proxying for health and ECD‐related programs? (2) Are associations of family background with ECD biased due to omission of unobserved community characteristics t…
