Beyond autonomous regions: Measuring communal self-governance
The most venerable cross-national measure of inter-group political inequality, brought about by the Ethnic Power Relations project, relies on group representation in national governments and assesses the power of groups to co-determine the country’s future. Nevertheless, types of autonomy are also important factors in power relations, and they substantiate the minorities’ ability to self-govern. Territorially concentrated communal groups typicall…
Supply-Side Anti-Pluralists and Demand-Side Anti-Plutocrats: The Case of 21st Century Populism
By the time communism collapsed in East Europe, there were several signs of backlash to liberal democracy worldwide. The writing on the wall first was deciphered as a resurgence of populism, and by the 2010s the interpretation soured into an experience of widespread democratic backsliding. The literature on these phenomena exploded, and by the early 2020s, some datasets were also created. This paper summarizes the main trends of contemporary view…
Conflicts rooted in socio-cultural animosities: A historical analysis
The paper studies the causes of domestic conflicts based on a project of the University of Illinois (Social, Political, Economic Event Database, SPEED), which leverages six decades of journalist output (1945-2005). It contains 62,141 newsworthy disruptive events worldwide and distinguishes between events rooted in class-based conflicts and anti-government sentiment, e.g., in addition to those rooted in socio-cultural animosities (SCA). We explore…

Methodological Nationalism in Global Studies and Beyond
Global studies, or the study of globalization, is a diverse field of research, with different disciplinary focuses and with some national versions. Russian Alexander Chumakov constructed it as a philosophical discipline, while in U.S. academia it is considered an empirical inquiry at the intersection of area studies, international studies, and international relations. This paper focuses on American global studies, pointing out the heavy epistemol…
Constitutional Definition of the Demos and Inter‐Ethnic Relations
The study reveals some conceptual differences inherent in the world's active constitutions as they relate to defining the country's population. The basic classification question asks whether the population of the state (“demos”) is conceptualized as a communally homogeneous or heterogeneous entity. An inquiry into the texts of more than 167 constitutions evidenced a wide gamut of answers, and an emerging trend toward endorsing the accommodation o…

Common Origin, Common Power, or Common Life: The Changing Landscape of Nationalisms
Socio-territorial psychic constructs, such as national identities, are perhaps the most important psychic phenomena for political science, with their strength so consequential for wars and inter-ethnic conflicts. The construction of the EU has faced scholars and practitioners with two identity-related problems: (i) whether the socio-territorial identities can be conceptualized as being multi-layered (nested, hyphenated, with non-conflictual relat…
