Unequal Covid-19 socioeconomic impacts and the path to a sustainable city and resilient community
The COVID-19 pandemic has unevenly impacted Sydney’s regions and communities. Despite the significance of the topic and considerable research on COVID-19, the pandemic’s unequal impact on Sydney’s disadvantaged areas remains unexplored. Urban location, ethnicity, education and employment status have affected the impact of COVID-19. This research argues that the socioeconomic impacts of the pandemic have also been spatially differentiated in Sydne…
Missing People and Places
Fast-growing non-slum poor settlements in South Asia have received scant attention in scientific research in which the focus has been on slum or informal settlements. Bibliometric analysis reveals that almost all aspects of slum life have been scientifically studied. As a result, a considerable amount of academic literature is available on slum issues. However, a large and ever-increasing number of people now live in non-slum poor settlements thr…
The diffused religious choice when applying for a university degree in Sydney
While the preference for university by school leavers has been researched extensively, this article seeks to explore if religious influence might also come to play when selecting a university, with particular reference to Australia, a country whose higher education environment is largely made up of public, secular universities. The data used is the first preference that students in High Schools in NSW make for an urban and public university in Sy…
Urban planning as a game of power
Neoliberalism, Power, and Right to the City and the Urban Divide in Sydney, Australia
Sydney, the capital of the Australian state of New South Wales, is geographically divided by socio-economic conditions and urban opportunities. However, the division in Sydney has not been investigated from an urban planning perspective. This research hypothesises that the urban planning system and its practice-produced consequences promote inequalities in Sydney. This study conceptualises Sydney's urban inequality in the context of critical conc…

Impact of Climate Change to Tourism Sector in the Vietnamese Mekong Delta
Mekong Delta Region of Vietnam is forecasted to have one of world’s most severe impacts from climate change. There is a big knowledge gap in research on climate change impacts on tourism in this area. While climate change’s impacts on agriculture and fisheries have received much attention from authorities and researchers, impacts on tourism have largely been ignored. This paper presents findings from a field study the authors conducted to fill th…
An evaluation on climate change adaptation for tourism sector in the Mekong Delta of Vietnam
This study analyses short- and long-term adaptation strategies for the tourism sector in Vietnam’s Mekong Delta that arose out of empirical research. The study evaluates the adaptation approach for government authorities, businesses, and tourists to manage climate change-related threats of rising temperature, irregular rainfall, sea-level rise, severe storms, and increasing salinity. In addition, the study points out the main responsibilities for…
Racism in the sharing economy
Religious Belief across ‘Post-secular’ Sydney
Cities were once thought to be crucibles of secularisation, where the retreat from religion and its expression would be most pronounced. This decline in faith was linked to the heightened levels of heterogeneity and cosmopolitanism within cities. However, there is recent evidence of both the continuation and of the recession of the secularisation process in contemporary Western societies, with the mix and pace of these trends being quite unique t…
Planning-support systems using an innovative blend of computer tools
There is no complete planning-support system (PSS) as yet, and such a thing is unlikely to emerge in the near future, at least in the form of a single software system or a fixed set of tools that can be applied to all planning situations. It is most likely that future PSSs will comprise combinations of software applications, with 'soft couplings' structured to a greater or lesser extent. Such systems are likely to be useful and technically feasib…
