  • Knowledge needs of research ethics committees for the integration of ethics in research and technology development

Open Access•B C Stahl, Étienne Aucouturier et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Responsible Innovation•2025

One well-established way of integrating ethics into the development of emerging technologies is the ethics review process which originated in biomedical research. This relies on an ex-ante review of research proposals through institutional bodies, usually known as research ethics committees (RECs). RECs are typically highly skilled in biomedical research questions and methodologies but are often less well equipped to deal with other types of rese…

  • AI research ethics is in its infancy: The EU’s AI Act can make it a grown-up

    Open Access•Anaïs Rességuier, Fabienne Ufert•ARTICLE•Research Ethics•2024

As the artificial intelligence (AI) ethics field is currently working towards its operationalisation, ethics review as carried out by research ethics committees (RECs) constitutes a powerful, but so far underdeveloped, framework to make AI ethics effective in practice at the research level. This article contributes to the elaboration of research ethics frameworks for research projects developing and/or using AI. It highlights that these framework…

  • From speculation to reality: Enhancing anticipatory ethics for emerging technologies (ATE) in practice

    Open Access•Steven Umbrello, Michael J Bernstein et al.•ARTICLE•Technology in Society•2023•Cited by: 3•References: 33

Various approaches have emerged over the last several decades to meet the challenges and complexities of anticipating and responding to the potential impacts of emerging technologies. Although many of the existing approaches share similarities, they each have shortfalls. This paper takes as the object of its study Anticipatory Ethics for Emerging Technologies (ATE) to technology assessment, given that it was formatted to address many of the priva…

  • AI ethics should not remain toothless! A call to bring back the teeth of ethics

    Open Access•Anaïs Rességuier, Rowena Rodrigues•ARTICLE•Big Data & Society•2020•Cited by: 9•References: 10

Ethics has powerful teeth, but these are barely being used in the ethics of AI today - it is no wonder the ethics of AI is then blamed for having no teeth. This article argues that 'ethics' in the current AI ethics field is largely ineffective, trapped in an 'ethical principles' approach and as such particularly prone to manipulation, especially by industry actors. Using ethics as a substitute for law risks its abuse and misuse. This significantl…

  • The moral sense of humanitarian actors: An Empirical Exploration

    Open Access•Anaïs Rességuier•ARTICLE•Disasters•2018•Cited by: 2•References: 22

This paper examines humanitarianism's moral positioning above private and political interests to save lives and alleviate suffering. It does not aim to assess the legitimacy of this stance, but rather to probe the way in which humanitarian actors relate to this moral dimension in their everyday work. It investigates empirically humanitarian ethics from the perspective of humanitarian actors, drawing on interviews conducted in Beirut, Lebanon, in …
