  • The Child Welfare Employees’ Constructions of Contact Visits for Parents and Children in Public Care

    Open Access•Marianne Buen Sommerfeldt, Hilde Anette Aamodt•ARTICLE•Social Sciences•2025•References: 6

Following a care order, children and parents are entitled to contact with each other in accordance with the conditions established by the Child Welfare Tribunals. How child welfare employees understand what contact visits can be and how they can be structured in line with the best interests of the child is crucial in their decision making. This article explores the different constructions of contact visits, in terms of how employees communicate t…

  • The Discourse on the "Dangerous Child Welfare Parent"-How Contact with Parents Is Constructed as a Risk for Children Under Public Care in Norway

    Open Access•Hilde Anette Aamodt, Marianne Buen Sommerfeldt•ARTICLE•Social Sciences•2025•Cited by: 1•References: 28

This article discusses contact and interaction between children, siblings and parents after a care order. We have collected and analyzed audio recordings of discussions between child welfare employees in Norway. In these meetings, the employees discuss and decide the extent and organization of visits and contact between parents and children under public care. Visitation mainly emerges as a risk in the discussions and thus as something that must b…

  • Og husk at vi ikke har mistet omsorgen for våre barn. Den er blitt tatt fra oss – Om hvordan foreldre som har blitt fratatt omsorgen inkluderes og ekskluderes i samfunnet

Hilde Anette Aamodt, Alicja Olkowska•ARTICLE•Dansk Sociologi•2024

  • The practice of zero tolerance

Hilde Anette Aamodt, Alicja Olkowska•ARTICLE•Critical and Radical Social Work•2024•References: 8

The article discusses the emergency placement of children by the Norwegian Child Welfare Services. Nine mothers were interviewed about their experiences of the transfer of care of their children. Several of the mothers had their children removed due to an emergency decision. The article focuses on one of these stories and analyses the way in which emergency placement can be seen as a form of communication and practice. The purpose of this article…

  • Is participation always appropriate? Social workers' perspectives on when to exclude children from conversations about contact visits

    Open Access•Iselin Huseby-Lie, Oddbjørg Skjær Ulvik et al.•ARTICLE•Child & Family Social Work•2024•Cited by: 2•References: 5

Previous studies suggest a widespread notion among social workers that children should be involved in child protection processes. Nevertheless, children are found to be unsatisfied with the degree to which they feel involved and heard in those processes. This study explored social workers' reasons to exclude children from conversations about contact visits. It applied a social constructivist approach, in which the dominant understandings of child…

  • The place of children in the imaginary of welfare states

Nicole Hennum, Hilde Anette Aamodt•ARTICLE•Critical and Radical Social Work•2020•Cited by: 6•References: 6

Child protection services represent a fruitful point of departure for researchers wishing to explore the complex relation between the state and parenting. One main reason for this stems from the mandate granted to these services by industrialised societies to intervene in the lives of families. In this article, we wish to show how one keyword – that of the child – functions in decisions made by Norwegian child protection services. We will be argu…

  • Å beslutte med henblikk på risiko? – Når politikken dytter ansvaret over på barnevernets ansatte

    Hilde Anette Aamodt•ARTICLE•Dansk Sociologi•2017
