  • Insights into School Well-Being: Development and Validation of the Appwel Measurement Instrument in Flemish Secondary Education

Open Access•Hanne Luts, Sascha Spikic et al.•ARTICLE•Education Sciences•2026

In contemporary education, schools are increasingly expected to foster students’ subjective well-being alongside academic achievement, as both are recognized as mutually reinforcing conditions for learning, success, and long-term outcomes. This study presents Appwel, a scalable instrument assessing pupils’ self-reported school experiences. It contains 21 statements rated on a 5-point Likert scale. Appwel was developed through a sequential three-p…

  • From Attitude to Action: A Preliminary Study on Enhancing Educators’ Competence for Inclusive Higher Education

Open Access•Katrien Hermans, Liesbet Saenen et al.•ARTICLE•Education Sciences•2025

Inclusive higher education requires educators who are not only willing to teach inclusively but who also have the skills to do so. This preliminary study offers a blueprint on how to examine the effectiveness of a three-day professional development program to strengthen the attitudes, self-efficacy, and inclusive didactics of educators. We propose a quasi-experimental design with pre-, post-, and follow-up measures, to measure the effect of the p…

  • Measuring and Activating iSTEM Key Principles among Student Teachers in STEM

Open Access•Sascha Spikic, Wouter Van Passel et al.•ARTICLE•Education Sciences•2022

Graduates with a STEM profile are in great demand, yet the outflow from these fields of study is highly insufficient. This is partly due to the fragmented way STEM learning content is taught in secondary education. Although the problem can be mitigated with the use of integrated STEM education (i.e., iSTEM), teachers are often unfamiliar with this type of education. To support teachers in implementing high-quality iSTEM education, a digital colla…

  • A Preliminary Meta-analysis of the Big Five Personality Traits’ Effect on Marital Separation

Sascha Spikic, Vicky Lyssens‐danneboom•ARTICLE•Journal of Divorce & Remarriage•2021

In line with social exchange theory, the Big Five traits are hypothesized to affect marital stability. We performed a meta-analysis, which restricted the study selection to title searches and broad-scale Big Five trait effects. In total, 51 study effects were incorporated into the analysis (N = 25,153). The findings showed that neurotic, extraverted, and open individuals experience a higher risk of divorce, whereas conscientious individuals run l…

  • Fertility Practitioners' Coping Strategies When Faced with Intra-Role Conflict from Screening Aspiring Single Mothers by Choice

    Open Access•Paulien Hertogs, Dries Van Gasse et al.•ARTICLE•Social Sciences•2021•Cited by: 2•References: 57

Women without a partner can become single mothers by choice through the use of fertility treatments. In Belgium, the decision to accept a candidate single mother by choice rests with the fertility clinic's multidisciplinary team of fertility practitioners. As a result, the fertility practitioners fulfil a gatekeeping role. However, this can cause an intra-role conflict as the responsibility to select the best fitting candidates is at odds with th…

  • More of the Same? Comparing the Personalities of Ex-Spouse and New Partner after Divorce

    Open Access•Sascha Spikic, Vicky Lyssens‐danneboom et al.•ARTICLE•Social Sciences•2021•Cited by: 2•References: 38

The similarity of the Big Five personality traits of ex-spouses and new partners was examined post-divorce. The notion that divorcees replicate their partner choice (fixed-type hypothesis) was tested against the hypotheses that they learn to select a new partner with more marriage-stabilizing personality traits than their former spouse (learning hypothesis), or are constrained by marriage market forces to repartner with someone who has less stabi…
