Visions of what the university is and ought to be, whom it should serve, and the possibilities it entails, have long been fiercely contested.A battle of imagination over the past, present, and future of higher education continues to play out across various sectors, with frictions arising on multiple fronts.Images of the university as a civic institution oriented towards social justice compete with those of the university as a corporate entity and…
Intercultural pedagogical practices in Chile and Peru
This article consists of a systematic literature review on intercultural pedagogical practices implemented in school contexts in Chile and Peru. Social class of origin is apparently an imperceptible attribute among doctorate holders seeking academic jobs. Yet, recent studies in different countries reveal that social class of origin may still be influencing the chances of PhD holders from low social class being hired at prestigious universities. Drawing from the theory of social and cultural reproduction, normative ‘fair’ academic hirings frameworks, and qualitative evidence collected in C…
Investigating critical thinking in higher education in Latin America
Critical thinking (CT) in higher education (HE) has been widely investigated in Western countries. Most of the research on CT has conceived it as a higher order thinking skill with implications for learning processes. CT has also been connected with critical pedagogies, an approach that seems particularly attuned with the Latin American region. Through a systematic literature review, this article maps the scholarship on CT in HE in Latin America …
Privileging the Privileged
In the last few decades, many developing countries have dramatically expanded the number of government-sponsored fellowships for graduate studies abroad to increase their participation in the knowledge economy. To award these grants, these programs have typically relied on international university rankings as their main selection criterion. Existing studies suggest these fellowships have been disproportionally awarded to applicants from privilege…
Stretching the academic harness
In this article, we analyse the impact of academic mobility on the construction of knowledge for Chilean scholars who have studied abroad. We conducted 41 semi-structured interviews with Chilean-born scholars in the social sciences and humanities, who accepted jobs at national research universities in Chile after receiving their doctorates abroad. Findings show that international academic mobility allowed these participants to question legitimise…
Equidad y capital humano avanzado
