Self-medication under uncertainty
How does drug quality affect self-medication behavior? We address this question in the context of Burkina Faso, where self-medication with antibiotics is widespread. Using chemical quality tests, we find that one in three antibiotics on the market is substandard or falsified, posing significant health risks. While consumers are broadly aware of the prevalence of poor-quality drugs, they struggle to assess quality based on observable cues such as …
Estimating the opportunity cost of seasonal malaria chemoprevention implementation in Burkina Faso, Mali and Senegal
Background Seasonal malaria chemoprevention (SMC) is a widely implemented malaria prevention strategy for children under five in the Sahel and sub-Sahel regions of Africa. This study aimed to estimate the full opportunity costs associated with SMC implementation in Mali, Burkina Faso and Senegal, addressing a gap in existing research that often focused solely on health system costs. Using a repeated descriptive cross-sectional design, data were c…
Cost of introducing and delivering malaria vaccine (RTS,S/AS01 E ) in areas of seasonal malaria transmission, Mali and Burkina Faso
BACKGROUND: malaria transmission and suggests countries consider seasonal vaccination in areas with highly seasonal malaria. Seasonal vaccination is uncommon and may require adaptations with potential cost consequences. This study prospectively estimates cost of seasonal malaria vaccine delivery in Mali and Burkina Faso. METHODS: Three scenarios for seasonal vaccine delivery are costed (1) mass campaign only, (2) routine Expanded Programme on Imm…
Perceptions of Covid-19 among frontline health workers in Burkina Faso
The research has generated information on healthcare workers' knowledge and perceptions of COVID-19. Therefore, they are useful for decision-making regarding protective measures for health workers in the management of COVID-19
The Covid-19 Risk Perception
Background: The population’s adherence to public health recommendations depends on many individual and collective cultural, socioeconomic, institutional, and environmental factors and the perception of the risks involved. This study aimed to describe and analyze the perception of risk related to coronavirus in the general population. Methods: A qualitative, exploratory cross-sectional study was conducted in Ouagadougou, the capital city of Burkin…
Inter-household transfers
Can information increase the understanding and uptake of insurance? Lessons from a randomized experiment in rural Burkina Faso
The health care burden in rural Burkina Faso
This paper maps the health care burden of households in rural Burkina Faso. More specifically we investigate the financial burden of health shocks and the manner in which households respond. Our data allows us to differentiate the burden of chronic illness and handicap, more frequent and recurring illnesses and episodes of severe illness, accident and mortality. We find that the burden of health shocks and health spending is high, ranging from on…
Malaria prevention measures in Burkina Faso
Most of the households received bed nets and other preventive method for free. There is equity in expenditures across SES groups. Free distribution of ITNs ensured that there was equity in ITN ownership among households. More research on the possibility of increasing access to other locally relevant methods of malaria control that proved to be effective is need
Exploring the effects of task shifting for HIV through a systems thinking lens
Our analysis highlights the importance of adopting a systems thinking approach in designing, implementing and evaluating health policies to mitigate some of the design issues or system bottle-necks that may impede their successful implementation or risk to present an incomplete or misleading picture of their impact
User fees and access to ARV treatment for persons living with HIV/Aids
Access to antiretroviral (ARV) treatment remains a crucial problem for patients living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA) in limited-resources countries. Some African countries have adopted the principle of providing ARV free of charge, but Burkina Faso opted for a direct out-of-pocket payment at the point of care delivery, with subsidized payments and mechanisms for the poorest populations to receive these services free of charge. Our objectives were to dete…
