Multivocal perspectives on children’s belonging in peer relationships in early childhood education and care
The present study explores how children, professionals and parents understand belonging in children’s peer relationships in early childhood education and care (ECEC). The participants in this qualitative research were children aged 3–5 years (n = 34), their parents (n = 9) and professionals (n = 15) from three ECEC groups in Finland. The data were collected through video-cued interviews (Tobin, 2019). The results of the reflexive thematic analysi…
Participatory research methods with young children: A systematic literature review
This systematic literature review aimed to ascertain what participatory methods for young children have been used in peer-reviewed empirical articles. A systematic literature search yielded 75 articles. Why is a live chicken banned from the kindergarten? Two lessons learned from teaching posthuman pedagogy to university students
The hierarchical human-centric paradigm has been criticized by various movements of posthuman philosophy because this paradigm forgets and dismisses nonhuman beings and entities: animals, nature, objects, and technology. When I developed a course called ‘Education and Adaptations of Animal Studies’ for university students in 2015, I learned two lessons in practice. First, many humans, pedagogues, and academics want to hold on to their anthropocen…
Reconsidering passivity and activity in children’s digital play
The discussion around children’s digital game culture has resulted in two contradictory images of children: the passive, antisocial children uncritically and mechanically consuming digital game content and the active, social children creatively using and interacting with digital game content. Our aim is to examine how these seemingly contradictory ideas of “active” and “passive” children could be considered. By means of empirical examples of chil…
