Over the past century, nearly two hundred times a governor has appointed an individual to fill a vacant Senate seat. This research seeks to understand the electoral fates of these appointed senators. First, I address the question of when and under what conditions an appointed senator will choose to run for reelection to the seat. Constituency Congruency and Candidate Competition in Primary Elections for the U.S. House
Previous research has largely concluded that House elections have become less competitive in the modern era. Our research examines one area where we expect to observe more competition—namely, primary elections. Research on candidate competition has focused on how much context matters in emergence decisions and election outcomes.
