  • The Silverton Field Experience: A model geography course for achieving high-impact educational practices (HEPs)

    Brandon J Vogt, Emily Skop•ARTICLE•Journal of Geography in Higher…•2017•Cited by: 2•References: 6

High-Impact Educational Practices (HEPs) are a set of specific teaching and learning approaches proven effective in university education. This paper focuses on the benefits derived from utilizing three particular HEPs (inquiry-based collaborative activities, undergraduate research, and experiential learning) while teaching a snow and ice field course titled “Silverton Field Experience.” Student evaluations and instructor feedback reinforce the no…

  • Extracting High Points from Statistical Surfaces: A Case Study Using Digital Elevation Models

Elizabeth A Wentz, Michael Kuby et al.•ARTICLE•Cartography and Geographic…•2001

We introduce and test an algorithm for extracting high-point locations from statistical surface data. The algorithm uses map algebra and local neighborhood analysis via three key parameters: minimum vertical gain, vertical gain neighborhood, and horizontal separation neighborhood. Though the method is applicable to any x,y,z data set, we tested it on 1:250,000 digital elevation models (DEMs) for Arizona. The resulting high points were compared qu…

  • Experiences in developing a tourism web site for hiking Arizona's highest summits and deepest canyons

    Michael J Kuby, Michael Kuby et al.•ARTICLE•Tourism Geographies•2001•Cited by: 1•References: 5

Arizona's 20-20 Challenge is a web site for hikers, created for the Arizona Office of Tourism. The web site lists the 20 highest summit trails and the 20 deepest canyon trails of Arizona, and provides maps and information for each. The Challenge offers a southwestern twist on the increasingly popular concept of 'peak bagging', which is extended here for the first time to canyons. Developing the list proved to be more challenging than expected, in…
