  • Late Holocene climate and environmental change in the Teuchitlán basin, Jalisco, Mexico

    Open Access•Gabriel Vázquez-Castro, Berenice Solis‐castillo et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary International•2025

  • Geochemical evidence of anthropogenic activity in western Mesoamerica since the Classic Period

    Open Access•Gabriel Vázquez-Castro, Priyadarsi D Roy et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Archaeological Science…•2019•References: 20

  • Reworked volcaniclastic deposits from the Usumacinta river, Mexico

    Open Access•Héctor Cabadas-Báez, Héctor Víctor Cabadas‐Báez et al.•ARTICLE•Geoarchaeology•2017•Cited by: 5•References: 15

The origin and distribution of volcanic glass temper in Maya ceramics has attracted the attention of Mesoamerican archaeologists for the last 80 years. Several Quaternary volcanoes, particularly those in the Central American Volcanic Arc (CAVA), are proposed as the source of tephra in the Maya region, however, a continuous stratigraphic record of this tephra deposit is still lacking. A reworked volcaniclastic deposit (9 ± 2 ka) was located in the…

  • Population Dynamics and Its Relation to Ancient Landscapes in the Northwestern Maya Lowlands

    Open Access•Rodrigo Liendo, Elizabeth Solleiro‐rebolledo et al.•ARTICLE•Archeological Papers of the…•2014•Cited by: 1•References: 28

In this article we present for discussion certain aspects of settlement and paleo-environmental data obtained over the last few years for the northwestern Maya lowlands. Accordingly, our goal is to identify a point of departure for future research by presenting a list of possible "environmental attractors" that might later be used for a better understanding of the seemingly divergent trajectories shown by ancient communities located in different …

  • Paleoenvironment and Human Occupation in the M aya Lowlands of the U sumacinta R iver, S outhern M exico

    Open Access•Berenice Solis‐castillo, Elizabeth Solleiro-Rebolledo et al.•ARTICLE•Geoarchaeology•2013•Cited by: 5•References: 13

Paleosol sequences along the lowest terraces of the U sumacinta R iver in southern M exico were used to reconstruct H olocene environmental changes and examine human–environmental interactions. Study sections were correlated through paleosol morphology, radiocarbon dating, and artifact seriation of Formative, C lassic, and P ostclassic ceramics. The oldest paleosols have gleyic features. Although they contain hard carbonate concretions dating to …
