  • Opening the black pot

    Open Access•Fiona Lambe, Ylva Ran et al.•ARTICLE•Energy Research & Social Science•2020•Cited by: 2•References: 11

Decades of efforts to replace traditional cooking methods that rely on solid biomass fuels with cleaner-burning and more energy-efficient cookstoves have fallen short of expectations, typically because the new stoves are only used for a short time, or they fail to fully displace the traditional methods. This points to a need to better understand how cookstove users assign value to the new cooking technologies. Recent research has shown that servi…

  • Embracing complexity

    Open Access•Fiona Lambe, Ylva Ran et al.•ARTICLE•World Development•2019•Cited by: 9•References: 7

Many interventions that aim to improve the livelihoods of vulnerable people in low-income settings fail because the behavior of the people intended to benefit is not well understood and /or not reflected in the design of interventions. Methods for understanding and situating human behavior in the context of development interventions tend to emphasize experimental approaches to objectively isolate key drivers of behavior. However, such methods oft…

  • What we mean by interactive form

Open Access•Mattias Arvola, Jeffrey Bardzell et al.•ARTICLE•interactions•2018

The Interactions website (interactions.acm.org) hosts a stable of bloggers who share insights and observations on HCI, often challenging current practices. Each issue we'll publish selected posts from some of the leading and emerging voices in the field

  • Ethnography by design

    Open Access•Fabian Segelström, Stefan Holmlid•ARTICLE•Arts and Humanities in Higher…•2014•Cited by: 3•References: 6

Design ethnography is the appropriation of ethnography for the purposes of informing design. This paper investigates the effects of these appropriations, through a comparative study of how designers and anthropologists approach the same field site and by a review of new techniques introduced by designers to do ethnography. The techniques reviewed all apply artefacts to mediate the ethnographic process. Conducting ethnography through artefacts can…

  • One Case, Three Ethnographic Styles

    Open Access•Fabian Segelström, Stefan Holmlid•ARTICLE•Ethnographic Praxis in Industry…•2012•Cited by: 2•References: 11

In a research project aimed at suggesting improvements at an annual advent fair three different ethnographic research approaches were used; Social Anthropology, Interaction Design and Mobile Ethnography. The paper focuses on how the three different approaches on ethnography affected choices in the research process, the outcomes of the research and how the outcomes were presented. It is found that the different motivations for doing ethnography be…
