What Makes the Grid “Clean”? Controversies and Paradoxes of New York’s Energy Transition
New York City 2100
NYC stakeholders co-produced future scenarios for urban resilience to extreme heat. • Business-as-usual land development reinforces existing environmental injustices. • Co-produced green infrastructure scenario increased heat mitigation by 108% • Co-produced green infrastructure scenario increased flood mitigation by 55% • Anticipatory urban planning can address climate resilience and environmental justice. Climate-driven hazards, such as extreme…
The “Centering Justice” Symposium
In January 2024, the Tishman Environment and Design Center (Tishman Center or TEDC) at The New School hosted the Centering Justice Symposium to explore how the rapid uptake of environmental and climate justice missions at university centers, together with increased federal and philanthropic funding opportunities, is shaping the relationship between higher education and the environmental justice (EJ) movement. Weighing Decisions in Monitoring and Evaluation of Clean Cookstoves
This case study examines agency within monitoring and evaluation (M&E) schemes for international development projects. Specifically, it evaluates a sensor to measure fuel consumption of clean cookstoves as a method of maintaining accountability and soliciting data on stove performance. Despite trends of increasingly automated M&E, the decisions of choosing, analyzing, and translating outcomes and indicators are influenced by stakeholder input. Th…
Towards an Archaeological-Ethnographic Approach to Big Data
For its volume, velocity, and variety (the 3 Vs), big data has been ever more widely used for decision-making and knowledge discovery in various sectors of contemporary society. Since recently, a major challenge increasingly recognized in big data processing is the issue of data quality, or the veracity (4th V) of big data. Without addressing this critical issue, big data-driven knowledge discoveries and decision-making can be very questionable. …
