  • Critical realism, psychology, and the crisis of replication: A reply to Haig; Derksen & Morawski; and Trafimow

    Open Access•Robert P Archer•ARTICLE•Theory & Psychology•2024

The commentaries provided by Haig; Derksen and Morawski; and Trafimow vary considerably in how they address critical realism and its implications for replication. Haig’s preference for Kaidesoja’s “naturalised” version of critical realism and Lipton’s inference to the best explanation is deeply problematic. While Derksen and Morawski concede that they deal only indirectly with critical realism, their endorsement of “performativity” negates it. In…

  • Retiring Popper: Critical realism, falsificationism, and the crisis of replication

    Open Access•Robert P Archer•ARTICLE•Theory & Psychology•2024

The recent so-called crisis of replication continues to dominate psychology’s methodological landscape. It is argued here that the apparent renaissance of Popperian thinking that characterises some of the key responses to the crisis of replication is fundamentally flawed. In essence, there is a serious lack of any sustained and rigorous treatment of ontology that underpins much of the current debate about replication and Popper’s falsificationist…

  • Mujeres enamoradas: Un epistolario de Pere Torroella y Pedro d'Urrea

    Robert Archer, Robert P Archer•ARTICLE•Hispanic Research Journal•2006

    Robert Archer, Robert P Archer•ARTICLE•British Journal of Educational…•2002•Cited by: 4•References: 11

It is not uncommon in educational research and social science in general either to eschew the word truth or to put it in scare quotes in order to signify scepticism about it. After the initial wave of relativism in the philosophy of natural science, a second wave has developed in social science with the rise of postmodernism and poststructuralism. The tendency here is to relativise truth or to bracket out questions of truth. In contradistinction,…

  • The 'Mini-Renaissance' in Marxist Educational Sociology: A critique

Robert Archer, Robert P Archer•ARTICLE•British Journal of Sociology of…•2001•References: 11

This paper argues that the recent 'mini-renaissance' in Marxist educational sociology as propounded in particular by The reason for this centres on the adoption of a universal internal relations social ontology, which results in the reduction of concrete social reality to the narrow abstraction of the omnipresent 'Capital Relation'. At the same time, such theorising remains conspicuously silent on the issue of the feasible alternatives to capital…

  • The Place of Culture in Organization Theory: Introducing the Morphogenetic Approach

    Open Access•Robert Archer, Robert P Archer•ARTICLE•Organization•2000•Cited by: 16•References: 22

As Allaire and Firsirotu (1984) pointed out over a decade ago, the concept of culture seemed to be sliding inexorably into a superficial explanatory pool that promised everything and nothing. However, since then, some sophisticated and interesting theoretical developments have prevented drowning in the pool of superficiality and hence theoretical redundancy. The purpose of this article is to build upon such theoretical developments and to introdu…

  • School Effectiveness Research: An Ideological Commitment

    Open Access•Robert Archer, Robert P Archer•ARTICLE•Journal of Philosophy of Education•1999•Cited by: 4

As the international momentum of the school effectiveness movement continues, its exponents remain largely impervious to criticism. This paper argues that while they may not readily align themselves with the individualistic aspects of Conservative social philosophy, their methodology necessarily secretes an atomised social ontology. The charge of ideological commitment rests on the fact that the essentially positivist epistemology employed by sch…

  • Structure, Agency and the Sociology of Education: Rescuing analytical dualism

    Robert Archer, Robert P Archer•ARTICLE•British Journal of Sociology of…•1999•Cited by: 21•References: 8

T heorising the interplay of structure and agency is the quintessential focus of sociolog ical endeavour. This paper aims to be part of that continuing endeavour, arguing for a strati ed social ontology, where structure and agency are held to be irreducible to each other and causally ef cacious, yet necessarily interdependent. It thus aims not to be part of that on-going journey in search of the 'ontological holy grail'. Instead, it offers a way …

    Open Access•Robert Archer, Robert P Archer•ARTICLE•The Sociological Review•1996•Cited by: 3•References: 7

The irony of the rejection of the sex/gender distinction is that it renders sociology per se an impossible enterprise. For it is my submission that, contra Hood-Williams (1996) and others, the biological and the social constitute distinct, irreducible levels of reality: to conflate (in a 'downwards' or 'upwards' direction) the two levels is immediately to render analysis of their relative interplay at best intractable. It is indeed arguable that …

This study investigated determinants of state-anxiety responses to an ego-threatening event for 79 psychiatric inpatients. Specifically, state-anxiety levels were assessed in high and low trait-anxious internal and external patients immediately prior to the presentation of individualized psychological test feedback. Analysis of variance demonstrated that high trait-anxious patients reported higher levels of state anxiety than low trait-anxious pa…

This study investigated the locus of control and anxiety characteristics of psychiatric patients in a 9-week residential skill training program. Statistical analyses of the admission responses of 127 patients showed that greater internality on the I-E Scale was related to lower STAI Trait Anxiety scores. Further, significant I-E and STAI Scale differences were found between patients in varying diagnostic categories. Conduct disordered patients we…

  • Comparison of Staff's and Patients' Perceptions of Ward Atmosphere

    Open Access•Robert P Archer, Kathy F Amuso•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1980

This study examined client and staff perceptions of ward atmosphere on a residential psychiatric unit. 24 clients were asked to respond to the Ward Atmosphere Scale with standard instructions. In addition, 20 staff members were requested to respond to the scale under two conditions of assessment: staff self-ratings reflecting their own perceptions of ward atmosphere characteristics and staff predictions of how the “typical patient” would respond …

Correlational analysis showed significant relationships between greater externality and higher depression scores for both depression measures. Also, significant sex differences were identified such that higher magnitude correlation coefficients were found for male patients. No significant relations…
