  • A Reconstruction of the Niche in Building 7050 at Hazor

Jennie Ebeling, Laura Mazow et al.•ARTICLE•Near Eastern Archaeology•2024•Referências: 10

In this article we offer new evidence in support of the function of Building 7050 at Tel Hazor as a temple. One criterion the excavators use to argue its function as a palace is a clay installation they describe as a “bathtub” or “bathtub-like structure” built into the rear niche of the building. Our analysis, however, suggests a storage function is more likely. We then offer a new reconstruction of Building 7050 and the features in the rear nich…

  • Contamination in Organic Residue Analysis

Laura B Mazow, Susanne Grieve et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Eastern Mediterranean…•2014•Referências: 4

The excitement of finding ceramic materials on an excavation often leads to questions of function and use that can affect the final interpretation of a site. Organic residue analysis (ORA) is commonly used in determining artifact function. ORA requires collaboration between an archaeologist and chemist in the analysis of the materials. But, the significance of sampling methods is often understated. In addition, the various instruments used to per…

  • The Root of the Problem

    Laura B Mazow•ARTICLE•Journal of Mediterranean…•2014•Citada por: 2

Reconstructions of ancient wool-processing techniques have generally been based on the assumption that lanolin was a by-product of the woolen textile industry. However, both ancient and modern sources point to significant procedural differences between the extraction and recovery of lanolin and the preparation of wool for spinning and weaving. The different conditions necessary to produce spinning wool or to recover lanolin are, in fact, contradi…

  • The ‘Bathtub Coffin’ From Tel Qitaf

    Laura B Mazow•ARTICLE•Palestine Exploration Quarterly•2014•Citada por: 3

Investigation of the ‘bathtub coffin’ from Tel Qitaf in the Beth Shean Valley indicates that its archaeological context is less secure than generally recognized. Additional research demonstrates that a large number of similar vessels in the Levantine corpus are also not found in burial contexts. This calls into question assumptions that such ‘bathtubs’ functioned solely as interment vessels and that their presence in the Iron II reflects foreign …

  • Household Archaeology in Ancient Israel and Beyond

Assaf Yasur-Landau, Jennie R Ebeling et al.•BOOK•Household archaeology in Ancient…•2011

Despite the large number of well-preserved domestic contexts in Bronze and Iron Age sites, household archaeology has not been a common approach to studying the material culture of Ancient Israel. Until recently, the dictates of “Biblical Archaeology” led to a narrow set of questions that ignored issues such as gender, status and production within the household. The present volume, which grew out of a session at the 2008 Annual Meeting of the Amer…
