  • Power and Fury

    Mark T Mitchell•BOOK•Power and Fury•2020

A marriage made in hell. Where did they come from, these furiously self-righteous "social justice warriors"? The growing radicalism and intolerance on the American left is the result of the strange union of Nietzsche's "will to power" and a secularized Puritan moralism. In this penetrating study, Mark T. Mitchell explains how this marriage made in hell gave birth to a powerful and destructive political and social movement. Having declared that "G…

  • Polanyi and the Role of Tradition in Scientific Inquiry

    Open Access•Mark T Mitchell•ARTICLE•Bulletin of Science Technology &…•2011

A characteristic of the modern mind is a disdain for tradition. Polanyi argues that neglecting the role of tradition leads to philosophical incoherence as well as moral and political chaos. Polanyi’s postcritical philosophy represents an attempt to show how tradition plays a vital role in the process of discovery. Ultimately, a coherent account of the sciences, as well as the humanities, is only possible when tradition is acknowledged as indispen…

  • Personal Participation

    Open Access•Mark T Mitchell•ARTICLE•Journal of Religious Ethics•2005

In this paper I focus on the central role faith plays in the thought of Polanyi and Voegelin. I begin by indicating how both find the modern conception of scientific knowing seriously wanting. What Polanyi terms “objectivism” and Voegelin calls “scientism” is the modern tendency to reduce knowledge to only that which can be scientifically demonstrated. This errant view of knowledge does not occur in a vacuum, though, and both men draw a connectio…

  • Race, the new right and state policy in Britain

    Mark T Mitchell, Mark Mitchell et al.•ARTICLE•Immigrants & Minorities•1989•References: 5

Much has been written about the ‘New Right’ and ‘new’ racism. However, it is apparent that the content of current emphases ignores both the complexities of New Right’ ideology and its use of perspectives and attitudes from earlier periods. Indeed, it appears that ‘race’ is not, at least in practical terms, a leading feature of Thatcherite government and policy, despite certain well‐publicized instances and the rhetoric of critics of the ‘New Righ…

  • Philosophical Foundations of the Three Sociologies

Mark T Mitchell, Mark Mitchell•REVIEW•British Journal of Sociology•1978•Cited by: 1

An extended historical and philosophical argument, this book will be a valuable text for all students of the philosophy of the social sciences. It discusses the serious alternatives to positivist and empiricist accounts of the physical sciences, and poses the debate between naturalism and anti-naturalism in the social sciences in new terms. Recent materialist and realist philosophies of science make possible a defence of naturalism which does not…
