  • Assembling the Irreconcilable

Open Access•Sabah Chalhi, Martijn Koster et al.•ARTICLE•Ethnos•2018•Cited by: 5•References: 29

This article demonstrates how youth workers in a Dutch city bring together seemingly irreconcilable worlds: the development policies of their organisations and the state on the one hand and the practices, needs and aspirations of young people on the other. Current policies, like much academic literature on street-level professionals, define youth workers as frontline workers, implementing policies as representatives of their organisations. We app…

  • Play and work

Jeroen Vermeulen, Jeroen F Vermeulen et al.•ARTICLE•Culture and Organization•2016•References: 5

In recent decades, sport as a social practice has become relevant in many different fields: in health, economy, politics, education, work and leisure. The importance of sport transcends the confine

  • On Lines, Place-making and Children’s Play. An Exploration of Street Life in the Netherlands

    Jeroen Vermeulen, Jeroen F Vermeulen•ARTICLE•Streetnotes•2015

In this essay the author explores the diverse ways in which children are creating places for play in the streets of the city of Utrecht in the Netherlands. More specifically, the focus of the essay is on the lines that children actively draw in place-making for play and on the meaning of lines that have been drawn for them as part of the design of playgrounds in streets. The written and visual observations about children, places and lines are the…

  • The bridge as playground

    Jeroen Vermeulen, Jeroen F Vermeulen•ARTICLE•Culture and Organization•2011•Cited by: 5•References: 12

This article deals with sport activities of youths on public playgrounds in the Netherlands and the organizing practices they are engaged in. In the evaluation of the social value of sport the metaphor of the bridge is widely used. Predominantly the bridge stands for ideals of connection and social inclusion through sport, while processes of separation and exclusion remain underexposed. In this article, I will argue that the real places where spo…

  • Local Korfball versus Global Basketball

Maarten Van Bottenburg, Jeroen Vermeulen et al.•ARTICLE•Ethnologie française•2011•Cited by: 3•References: 7

  • Culture in Action

    Open Access•M Noordegraaf, Jeroen Vermeulen et al.•ARTICLE•Public Administration•2010•Cited by: 5•References: 13

This article discusses the relation between administrative culture and the capacity to act. It analyses how the Dutch city of Rotterdam radically altered its safety and ‘livability’ approaches in the face of new challenges, and how the city used its cultural make-up and traditions in doing so. This takes its importance from that fact that local governments are almost continuously confronted with the need to reform policies and methods in the face…
