Local Factors Affecting the Tendency to Bypass Local Hospitals for Inpatient Mental Health Care
Using the records of 2,171 rural residents of Illinois who received inpatient treatment for mental illness or substance abuse, this paper examines factors that influence the tendency to seek service from a distant rather than a local hospital. Results indicate that the age and insurance coverage of the individual, the per capita income of the community area, surrogates for the service orientation of the local hospital and the proximity of the pat…

In this paper, we report on a study of the relationship between trust and psychological distress in a community near Three Mile Island (TMI). Trust is defined as the expectation that others will honor agreements, either implicit or explicit. An investigation into support for restrictions on HIV carriers in the Chicago metropolitan area
An investigation into support for restrictions on people testing seropositive for HIV is reported on. Data were collected during telephone interviews with two-hundred adults aged eighteen to sixty-five in the Chicago metropolitan area. Using the analytic technique of LISREL, six models which attempt to explain support for restrictions were tested.
