BACKGROUND: Measuring patient experiences has become a key initiative for improving healthcare quality worldwide. Since patient experiences are inherently shaped by sociocultural context and healthcare system structures, developing locally relevant measurement tools is crucial for reflecting patients' needs and expectations. South Korea has developed a patient experience questionnaire for hospital inpatient care within its National Health Insuran…
Communication-based strategies to curb the overuse of low-value cancer screening
Drawing upon the theory of reasoned action, the protection motivation theory, and theories of regret, this study proposes and examines three communication strategies to curb the overuse of low-value cancer screening: (a) highlighting negative affective consequences of screening; (b) providing information about diagnostic uncertainty, and (c) using a noncancer disease label. An online survey-based experiment using a 2 (affective message: absent vs…
The Effect of Adult Children’s Working Hours on Visits to Elderly Parents
The Effect of a Reduced Statutory Workweek on Familial Long-Term Care in Korea
We interpret the findings within the context of developed Asian countries with long work hours and Confucian traditions, and suggest regulating workweeks as a policy tool to encourage familial long-term care in the rapidly aging societies
Public health expenditure and health system responsiveness for low-income individuals
Improvement in overall responsiveness to people's expectations is an important goal for any health system; socioeconomic equity in responsiveness is equally important. However, it is not known if socioeconomic disparities in responsiveness can be reduced through greater public health expenditures. This article assesses the relationship of the proportion of public health expenditure over total health expenditure (PPHE) with responsiveness for poor…
Tobacco use and household expenditures on food, education, and healthcare in low- and middle-income countries
Tobacco use in LMICs may have a negative influence on investment in human capital development. Addressing the tobacco use problem in LMICs could benefit not only the health and economic well-being of smokers and their immediate families but also long-run economic development at a societal level
Basic Old-Age Pension and financial wellbeing of older adults in South Korea
South Korea's old-age poverty rate is among the highest in the developed world. Confronted with the increasing demand for a social safety net for older people, the South Korean government introduced the Basic Old-Age Pension (BOAP) in 2008. The BOAP is a non-contributory, means-tested pension covering 70 per cent of the elderly population, with monthly benefits amounting to 84 kW (thousand Korean won, approximately equivalent to US $1) for single…

Socio-economic disparities in health system responsiveness in India
OBJECTIVE: To assess the magnitude of socio-economic disparities in health system responsiveness in India after correcting for potential reporting heterogeneity by socio-economic characteristics (education and wealth). METHODS: Data from Wave 1 of the Study on Global Ageing and Adult Health (2007-2008) involving six Indian states were used. Seven health system responsiveness domains were considered for a respondent's last visit to an outpatient s…
Effect of Husbands' Employment Status on Their Wives' Subjective Well-being in Korea
This study used data from the Korea Labor and Income Panel Survey (2001, 2003-2007) to estimate the effect of a husband's unemployment on his wife's subjective well-being (SWB). Ordinal and pooled binary logistic regression models were estimated using 20,099 observations from a sample of 4,569 married women; a fixed-effects logistic regression model was also estimated using 5,514 observations from a restricted sample of 1,070 wives who experience…
Awareness and acceptability of human papillomavirus vaccine
Among populations who are not currently aware of the HPV vaccine, the potential impact of raising awareness on acceptability of HPV vaccination is substantial. This finding provides additional support to strengthening public health programs that increase awareness and policy efforts that address barriers to HPV vaccination
The Effect of Coresidence With an Adult Child on Depressive Symptoms Among Older Widowed Women in South Korea
The IV estimation method can be a useful approach to addressing the potential endogeneity between intergenerational coresidence and elderly health. Rapidly decreasing rates of intergenerational coresidence may raise public health concerns among older widowed women in South Korea
Predictors of and health services utilization related to depressive symptoms among elderly Koreans
