Are knowledge and interpersonal contact cures for Alzheimer’s stigma? Data from caregivers offer clues
Research on caregivers suggests interpersonal contact with persons with Alzheimer's disease (AD) and higher disease-oriented knowledge may heighten AD stigma, though these same mechanisms are often employed in anti-stigma campaigns. If we better understand associations among caregiver experience, interpersonal contact, AD knowledge and AD stigma, we can develop improved ways of reducing stigma and avoid unintended consequences. In a factorial des…
A survey study of Alzheimer’s stigma among Black adults
While older adults reported less AD stigma than younger adults, AD biomarker testing caused similarly high concerns about structural discrimination and negative severity attributions. Thus, use of AD biomarker diagnosis may increase AD stigma and exacerbate healthcare disparities known to effect AD diagnosis in some Black adults. Advances in AD diagnosis may interact with social and structural factors to differentially affect groups of Black adul…
Double-Edged Sword
A positive biomarker result heightens AD diagnosis confidence but also correlates with more AD stigma. Our findings inform strategies to promote early diagnosis and clinical discussions with individuals undergoing AD biomarker testing
The relative contributions of biomarkers, disease modifying treatment, and dementia severity to Alzheimer's stigma
Adaptive linear step-up procedures that control the false discovery rate
The linear step-up multiple testing procedure controls the false discovery rate at the desired level q for independent and positively dependent test statistics. When all null hypotheses are true, and the test statistics are independent and continuous, the bound is sharp. When some of the null hypotheses are not true, the procedure is conservative by a factor which is the proportion m0/m of the true null hypotheses among the hypotheses. We provide…
Subset Selection Toward Optimizing the Best Performance at a Second Stage
In the search for the best of n candidates, two-stage procedures of the following type are in common use. In a first stage, weak candidates are removed, and the subset of promising candidates is then further examined. At a second stage, the best of the candidates in the subset is selected. In this article, optimization is not aimed at the parameter with largest value but rather at the best performance of the selected candidates at Stage 2. Under …
Large Sample Theory for the Bounds on the Gini and Related Indices of Inequality Estimated From Grouped Data
The joint asymptotic distribution of the upper and lower bounds for the Gini index derived by Gastwirth for grouped data are obtained. From them a conservative asymptotically distribution-free confidence interval for the population Gini index is presented. The methods also yield similar results for other indices of inequality (e.g., Theil's and Atkinson's)
Infertility and age at first coitus
Reported age at first coitus was shown to be associated with incidence and degree of infertility. Infertility patients reported later first coital ages than gynaecological patients in a sample of 792 women seen in a major infertility service. Among the infertility patients, those who had never conceived presented a later first coital age than those who had previously conceived. Routine gynaecological patients reported the youngest first coital ag…
