  • Impacts of Green New Deal Energy Plans on Grid Stability, Costs, Jobs, Health, and Climate in 143 Countries

    Open Access•Mark Z Jacobson, Mark A Delucchi et al.•ARTICLE•One Earth•2020

(One Earth 1, 449–463; December 20, 2019) In the originally published version of this article, Table S5 unfortunately contained incorrect values in the “2050 end-use demand (GW)” column for countries spanning from Curacao to the Syrian Arab Republic on pages 47 and 48. The values for these countries appeared correctly in Table S2. Table S5 has now been corrected in the Supplemental Information PDF online, and the authors apologize for any confusi…

  • Bounding the role of black carbon in the climate system

    Open Access•Tami C Bond, Sarah J Doherty et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Geophysical Research:…•2013

Black carbon aerosol plays a unique and important role in Earth's climate system. Black carbon is a type of carbonaceous material with a unique combination of physical properties. This assessment provides an evaluation of black‐carbon climate forcing that is comprehensive in its inclusion of all known and relevant processes and that is quantitative in providing best estimates and uncertainties of the main forcing terms: direct solar absorption; i…

  • Association between adiposity and physical activity levels of schoolchildren during physical education lessons

Open Access•Mark Z Jacobson, Chris Laws et al.•ARTICLE•Public Health Nutrition•2012

impedance analysis (TANITA-BC-418MA). A validated physical activity questionnaire was used to ascertain their PE dislikes/barriers, and their answers were compiled into different categories, according to the core themes that were identified during thematic data analysis

  • Recent shift from forest to savanna burning in the Amazon Basin observed by satellite

    Open Access•John E Ten Hoeve, L A Remer et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2012

The numbers of fires detected on forest, savanna and transition lands during the 2002-10 biomass burning seasons in Amazonia are shown using fire count data and co-located land cover classifications from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS). The ratio of forest fires to savanna fires has varied substantially over the study period, with a maximum ratio of 0.65:1 in 2005 and a minimum ratio of 0.27:1 in 2009, with the four lowe…

  • Examining the impacts of ethanol (E85) versus gasoline photochemical production of smog in a fog using near-explicit gas- and aqueous-chemistry mechanisms

    Open Access•Diana L Ginnebaugh, Mark Z Jacobson•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2012

This study investigates the air quality impacts of using a high-blend ethanol fuel (E85) instead of gasoline in vehicles in an urban setting when a morning fog is present under summer and winter conditions. The model couples the near-explicit gas-phase Master Chemical Mechanism (MCM v. 3.1) with the extensive aqueous-phase Chemical Aqueous Phase Radical Mechanism (CAPRAM 3.0i) in SMVGEAR II, a fast and accurate ordinary differential equation solv…

  • Factors associated with self-reported adherence to antiretroviral therapy in a Tanzanian setting

    Melissa H Watts, Melissa H Watt et al.•ARTICLE•AIDS Care•2010

This study aimed to determine the level of antiretroviral adherence and factors associated with adherence among patients receiving free antiretroviral therapy (ART) at one clinic in Tanzania. Adult patients were recruited into the cross-sectional study and completed a survey that included self-reported adherence over four days and over one month. Less than 95% adherence on either measure was considered "poor." Factors associated with adherence in…

  • Changing Trends in Sulfur Emissions in Asia

Geneviève Fraisse, Gregory R Carmichael et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Science & Technology•2002

In the early 1990s, it was projected that annual SO2 emissions in Asia might grow to 80-110 Tg yr(-1) by 2020. Based on new high-resolution estimates from 1975 to 2000, we calculate that SO2 emissions in Asia might grow only to 40-45 Tg yr(-1) by 2020. The main reason for this lower estimate is a decline of SO2 emissions from 1995 to 2000 in China, which emits about two-thirds of Asian SO2. The decline was due to a reduction in industrial coal us…
