  • Chinese Policy Responses to Covid ‐19, Trust in Government, and Cultural Worldviews

Open Access•M Yuan, Brendon Swedlow et al.•ARTICLE•Review of Policy Research•2026•References: 39

Using Policy Feedback Theory and Grid Group Cultural Theory, we show how COVID‐19 policy stringency and individuals' cultural worldviews influence trust in different levels of Chinese government. Relying on the Oxford COVID‐19 Government Response Tracker (OxCGRT) and independent surveys in 2020 and 2022, we find that, as expected, Chinese respondents trust the central government more than local governments in 2020, but that increasing stringency …

  • Morphological conditions on movement-chain resolution

    Open Access•M Yuan•ARTICLE•Natural Language and Linguistic…•2025•References: 103

Recent research on the Copy Theory of Movement has suggested that the realization of movement chains may be regulated by well-formedness conditions governing complex word formation, such as the Stray Affix Filter (e.g., Nunes 2004; Landau 2006). This paper extends this idea to account for certain underdocumented patterns of noun incorporation in Inuktitut (Eastern Canadian Inuit). In contrast to most prior characterizations of incorporation in th…

  • Case as an Anaphor Agreement Effect

    M Yuan•ARTICLE•Linguistic Inquiry•2023•Cited by: 2•References: 23

The anaphor agreement effect (AAE) is the crosslinguistic inability for anaphors to covary with φ-agreement (Rizzi 1990, Woolford 1999); languages use various strategies that conspire to circumvent this effect. In this squib, I identify and confirm a prediction arising from two previous observations by Woolford (1999) concerning the scope of the AAE, based on new evidence from Inuktitut (Eastern Canadian Inuit). I propose that anaphors in Inuktit…

  • Ergativity and object movement across Inuit

    Open Access•M Yuan•ARTICLE•Language•2022•Cited by: 5•References: 8

Although the Inuit language is generally characterized as ergative, it has been observed that the ergative case patterning is relatively weaker in certain Eastern Canadian varieties, resulting in a more accusative appearance (e.g.Johns 2001, 2006, Carrier 2017).This article presents a systematic comparison of ergativity in three Inuit varieties, as a lens into the properties of case alignment and clause structure in Inuit more broadly.Building on…

  • Diagnosing Object Agreement vs. Clitic Doubling

    M Yuan•ARTICLE•Linguistic Inquiry•2021•Cited by: 3•References: 39

Much recent literature has focused on whether the verbal agreement morphology cross-referencing objects is true φ-agreement or clitic doubling. I address this question on the basis of comparative data from related Inuit languages, Inuktitut and Kalaallisut (West Greenlandic), and argue that both possibilities are attested in Inuit. Evidence for this claim comes from diverging syntactic and semantic properties of the object DPs encoded by this cro…
