The Objective Physical Activity and Cardiovascular Disease Health in Older Women (Opach) Study
ClinicalTrials.gov identifier NCT00000611 . Registered 27 October 1999
Updating the Evidence for Physical Activity
PURPOSE OF THE STUDY: There is a global imperative to increase awareness of the emerging evidence on physical activity (PA) among older adults. "Healthy aging" has traditionally focused on preventing chronic disease, but greater efforts are required to reduce frailty and dependency and to maintain independent physical and cognitive function and mental health and well-being. DESIGN AND METHODS: This integrated review updates the epidemiological da…

The Relationship between Outdoor Activity and Health in Older Adults Using GPS
Physical activity (PA) provides health benefits in older adults. Research suggests that exposure to nature and time spent outdoors may also have effects on health. Older adults are the least active segment of our population, and are likely to spend less time outdoors than other age groups. The relationship between time spent in PA, outdoor time, and various health outcomes was assessed for 117 older adults living in retirement communities. Partic…
Environmental Correlates of Overweight and Obesity in Community Residing Older Adults
This research suggests that neighborhood environment may have an influence on BMI above and beyond walking activity
Perceived and objective neighborhood environment attributes and health related quality of life among the elderly in Bogotá, Colombia
The Importance of Walking to Public Health
PURPOSE: There is clear evidence that physical activity, including walking, has substantial benefits for health. This article, prepared as part of the proceedings of a conference on walking and health, discusses the type of walking that produces substantial health benefits, considers several methodological issues pertinent to epidemiologic studies investigating the association of walking and health, and reviews some of the reasons for the large p…

Results of the First Year of Active for Life
Objectives. Translating efficacious interventions into practice within community settings is a major public health challenge. We evaluated the effects of 2 evidence-based physical activity interventions on self-reported physical activity and related outcomes in midlife and older adults. Methods. Four community-based organizations implemented Active Choices, a 6-month, telephone-based program, and 5 implemented Active Living Every Day, a 20-week, …
Cost Analysis of the Built Environment
We estimated the annual cost of bike and pedestrian trails in Lincoln, Neb, using construction and maintenance costs provided by the Department of Parks and Recreation of Nebraska. We obtained the number of users of 5 trails from a 1998 census report. The annual construction cost of each trail was calculated by using 3%, 5%, and 10% discount rates for a period of useful life of 10, 30, and 50 years. The average cost per mile and per user was calc…
The Public Health Perspective in Health Promotion and Disability Prevention for Older Adults
As the United States federal public health agency, the role of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in health promotion and disability prevention with older adults encompasses research, surveillance and program activities in aging. This article characterizes the objectives and context of prevention in later life and summarizes CDC's functions, collaborative partnerships with public health agencies and other organizations, and rang…
Economic evaluation of a community based exercise programme to prevent falls
OBJECTIVE: To assess the incremental costs and cost effectiveness of implementing a home based muscle strengthening and balance retraining programme that reduced falls and injuries in older women. DESIGN: An economic evaluation carried out within a randomised controlled trial with two years of follow up. Participants were individually prescribed an exercise programme (exercise group, n=116) or received usual care and social visits (control group,…
Dietary vitamin C and bone mineral density in postmenopausal women in Washington State, USA
STUDY OBJECTIVE: To examine the relationship between dietary vitamin C and hip bone mineral density (BMD) in postmenopausal women. DESIGN: This was a cross sectional study using retrospective diet and vitamin supplement data. SETTING: The Seattle area of Washington State. PARTICIPANTS: Screenees for a clinical trial of a drug to prevent osteoporotic fractures; 1892 women aged 55-80 years who had hip bone densitometry and osteoporosis risk factor …
Factors associated with participation in a community senior health promotion program
Factors associated with participation in a community senior health promotion program were studied in 103 participants and a population-based control group of 531 non-participants. Compared to controls, participants had similar physical health status, but lower mental and social health status. Both men and women participants reported more depressive symptoms, lower positive affect, and lower social participation. Mental and social health may be im…
Characterizing Patient Dysfunction in Alzheimer??s-Type Dementia
Although Alzheimer's-type dementia (ATD) is characterized by global intellectual deterioration, few systematic efforts have been made to characterize overall dysfunction of ATD patients. The Sickness Impact Profile (SIP) was administered to ATD patients and family members to determine the concurrent validity of family member assessments of functional status. Using the Mini-Mental State score and modified Dementia Rating Scale as validation criter…
The Relationship of Attitude Changes to Compliance With Influenza Immunization
In a longitudinal, prospective study of patient's decisions about influenza vaccination, the stability of attitudes about the flu and flu shots, the stability of flu shot decisions, and the relationship of attitude shifts to compliance were studied. In both 1981 and 1982 for 216 patients at high risk for complications of influenza, attitudes about 15 issues in the decision to obtain a flu shot were measured and each patient's behavioral intention…
