Trends in long-term care use among Dutch older men and women between 1995 and 2016
This study examines whether the gender gap in long-term care use in the Netherlands has changed between 1995 and 2016. Previous research has shown that women use more formal care services than men, while men use more informal care. In the past decades, there have been changes in the individual determinants of care use, such as health and social resources, and care provision. This raises the question of whether gender differences in care use have …
Neighborhood environment, social participation, and physical activity in older adults with lower limb osteoarthritis
Trends in working conditions and health across three cohorts of older workers in 1993, 2003 and 2013
Changes in working conditions may not contribute to improved physical and psychological functioning, but do contribute to improved cognitive functioning to some extent. Further adjustment of physical work demands and psychosocial work resources may help to reach sustainable employability of older workers
Early life undernutrition and adult height
Trends in risk factors for coronary heart disease in the Netherlands
Four out of six risk factors for CHD showed a favourable or stable trend. The rise in diabetes mellitus and BMI is worrying with respect to CHD morbidity and mortality
Impact of clinical osteoarthritis of the hip, knee and hand on self-rated health in six European countries
Clinical OA at different sites was related to fair-to-poor SRH in the general population. Most associations were (partly) mediated by physical functioning, indicating that deteriorating physical function in patients with OA should be a point of attention in patient care
Development and validation of a questionnaire assessing the perceived control in health care among older adults with care needs in the Netherlands
Our questionnaire revealed sufficient construct validity and internal consistency. The instrument provides a basis for further quantitative research regarding control, especially in relation to health care-related outcomes
Availability and use of neighborhood resources by older people with osteoarthritis
Feelings of loneliness, but not social isolation, predict dementia onset
BACKGROUND: Known risk factors for Alzheimer's disease and other dementias include medical conditions, genetic vulnerability, depression, demographic factors and mild cognitive impairment. The role of feelings of loneliness and social isolation in dementia is less well understood, and prospective studies including these risk factors are scarce. METHODS: We tested the association between social isolation (living alone, unmarried, without social su…

Coordinated Analysis of Age, Sex, and Education Effects on Change in MMSE Scores
OBJECTIVES: We describe and compare the expected performance trajectories of older adults on the Mini-Mental Status Examination (MMSE) across six independent studies from four countries in the context of a collaborative network of longitudinal studies of aging. A coordinated analysis approach is used to compare patterns of change conditional on sample composition differences related to age, sex, and education. Such coordination accelerates evalua…
Is Self-Rated Health Still Sensitive for Changes in Disease and Functioning Among Nonagenarians
SRH among nonagenarians was sensitive to changes in the number of chronic conditions and functioning although more pronounced on the longer than on the shorter term
Does loneliness mediate the relation between social support and cognitive functioning in later life
A comparison of Dutch frail older adults in 1998 and 2008

Cohort Profile
The Longitudinal Aging Study Amsterdam (LASA) was initiated by the Dutch Ministry of Welfare, Health and Culture (currently Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sports). By the end of the 1980s, ministry officials recognized that ageing would be a major demographic driving force, shaping the need for health care in the Dutch population in the near future. Therefore, they became increasingly interested in the process of ageing and ageing-related determ…
Somatic Multimorbidity and Self-rated Health in the Older Population
Our findings help to improve understanding of the impact multimorbidity has on SRH: Having a single disease increases the chance of poor health more than each co-occurring disease, indicating some overlap between diseases or adaptation to declining health
Do Positive Psychological Characteristics Modify the Associations of Physical Performance With Functional Decline and Institutionalization? Findings From the Longitudinal Aging Study Amsterdam
Positive psychological characteristics, related to sense of control, play a role in the transition between stages in the disablement process. Specific psychological characteristics may be associated with different stages of the disablement process and may in turn be affected by disablement
Accumulated and Differential Effects of Life Events on Cognitive Decline in Older Persons
Highly stressful events seem to be associated with a higher rate of cognitive decline, whereas mild chronic stressors may have an arousing function that stimulates cognitive performance
God image and Five-Factor Model personality characteristics in later life
Affective or emotional aspects of religiousness are considered to be crucial in the association between religiousness and well-being, especially in later life. Such affective aspects can be understood as pertaining to the God–object relationship, corresponding to feelings of trust towards God or to religious discontent. Personality characteristics, such as those defined by the Five-Factor Model of Personality, are expected to correspond with God …
What does quality of life mean to older frail and non-frail community-dwelling adults in the Netherlands
Cosmic Transcendence and Framework of Meaning in Life
The current study indicates that the personal relevance of cosmic transcendence depends on cultural factors such as secularization. Furthermore, cosmic transcendence seems to unfold as an important domain in the life view of women, the older old, and the widowed
Stability and Change of Neuroticism in Aging
Data from the Longitudinal Aging Study Amsterdam were used to study the relationship between neuroticism and aging. At baseline, cross-sectional analyses of data from 2,117 respondents (aged 55-85 years, M = 70) showed no significant age differences. The magnitude of the 3- and 6-year stability coefficients was high, and 12% of the elderly participants showed a clinically relevant mean level change. Longitudinal multilevel analyses showed a small…
Activity in Older Adults
The impact of three types of everyday activities (i.e., social, experiential, and developmental) on four cognitive functions (i.e., immediate recall, learning, fluid intelligence, and information-processing speed) and one global indicator of cognitive functioning (Mini-Mental State Exam score) over a period of 6 years was studied in a large 55--85 year-old population-based sample (N = 2,076). A cross-lagged regression model with latent variables …
Life expectancies in specific health states
With the trend toward aging, increases in health care expenditures are expected. Insight into (future) needs for care services requires a taxonomy of older persons’ health conditions: how health status develops as people age and how these health conditions determine residual life expectancy. In this paper we provide this information for the Netherlands. We apply a flexible nonparametric method—he Grade of Membership method—to a national database …
The effects of environmental context and personal resources on depressive symptomatology in older age
This study examines the environmental and psychosocial determinants of depression in older adults. Based on Lawton's environmental docility thesis, the question is posed: is the strong association between functional limitations and depressive symptomatology affected when environmental conditions, objective and subjective efficacy, and docile or proactive behaviour are taken into account. Data were used from LASA (the Longitudinal Aging Study Amst…

The Assessment of ADL among Frail Elderly in an Interview Survey
The impact of three sociodemographic, two cognitive, two affective, and four personality measures on the discrepancies between self-reported and performance-based ADL in a sample of 753 frail elderly is studied by means of multiple regression analyses. Underestimation (i.e., lower self-reported levels of ADL compared to performance-based levels) occurs, in particular, among subjects with low perceptions of physical competence and mastery or perso…

Asking the Age Question in Elderly Populations
In two large-scale surveys among elderly respondents we evaluated the accuracy of answers obtained to three differently formulated age questions. Respondents included 6,149 individuals aged 65-86 living in The Netherlands. Because criterion age data were available from different sources, it was possible to compare the respondent's reported age with his or her actual age. Refusal rates were low for all three questions. Both age and cognitive capab…

Brief Communication.
The Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression scale (CES-D) has been widely used in studies of late-life depression. Psychometric properties are generally favourable, but data on the criterion validity of the CES-D in elderly community-based samples are lacking. In a sample of older (55–85 years) inhabitants of the Netherlands, 487 subjects were selected to study criterion validity of the CES-D. Using the 1-month prevalence of major depression …
Effects of Social Support and Personal Coping Resources on Mortality in Older Age
This study focuses on the role of social support and personal coping resources in relation to mortality among older persons in the Netherlands. Data are from a sample of 2,829 noninstitutionalized people aged between 55 and 85 years who took part in the Longitudinal Aging Study Amsterdam in 1992-1995. Social support was operationally defined by structural, functional, and perceived aspects, and personal coping resources included measures of maste…
