    Muhammad Al-Atawneh, Sabina Abdulaev•ARTICLE•The Journal for Interdisciplinary…•2025

This article elaborates on the classical Islamic discourse about epidemics in the medieval Near East, with special attention to the crucial question: How were faith and reason presented in the medieval Islamic theological discourse on epidemics? To best address this question, we have chosen an analytical framework for studying how values, beliefs, and scientific assumptions are expressed in theological and medical discourses by various prominent …

  • Islam in Israel

Muhammad Al-Atawneh, Nohad Ali et al.•BOOK•Islam in Israel•2018

Islam is the religion of the majority of Arab citizens in Israel and since the late 1970s has become an important factor in their political and socio-cultural identity. This leads to an increasing number of Muslims in Israel who define their identity first and foremost in relation to their religious affiliation. By examining this evolving religious identity during the past four decades and its impact on the religious and socio-cultural aspects of…

Muhammad Al-Atawneh•ARTICLE•Bustan The Middle East Book Review•2016

  • Khurūj in Contemporary Islamic Thought

    Open Access•Muhammad Al-Atawneh•ARTICLE•Ilahiyat Studies•2016

The “Arab Spring„ has challenged contemporary Muslim religious scholars (ʿulamāʾ) to address the popular issues of opposition to the ruler (al-khurūj ʿalá l-ḥākim). It seems that these ʿulamāʾ, from various schools of Islamic thought, are unable to reach a consensus on these matters. Their positions range from wide recognition of the right to nonviolent civil protest, e.g., protest rallies, strikes, civil unrest, etc., to the strict prohibition o…

  • Leisure and Entertainment (malāhī) in Contemporary Islamic Legal Thought

    Muhammad Al-Atawneh•ARTICLE•Islamic Law and Society•2012•Cited by: 3

The status of leisure and entertainment (hereafter: malāhī) is an age-old issue that emerged during the very early stages of Islam and is still being debated today. Generations of Muslim scholars and jurists have attempted to identify and delineate the permissible and the forbidden in this regard to accommodate the socio-cultural contexts of their respective societies. This article examines contemporary Islamic discourse on entertainment, particu…

  • Wahhābī Legal Theory as Reflected in Modern Official Saudi Fatwās

    Muhammad Al-Atawneh•ARTICLE•Islamic Law and Society•2011

The purpose of this essay is to open a window into Wahhābī legal theory as reflected in modern-day official Saudi fatwā s. Discussion includes ijtihād , taqlīd , madhhab affiliation, sources and methodology. Emphasis is placed on continuity and change in light of the country's official school of law, the Hanbalī madhhab . I show that, in principle, modern-day Wahhābīs remain faithful to the tenets of Hanbalism by privileging adherence to the text…

  • Wahhabi Self-Examination Post-9/11

    Muhammad Al-Atawneh•ARTICLE•Middle Eastern Studies•2011•Cited by: 2

Saudi Arabia found itself under an unflattering spotlight in the wake of the events of 9/11, perhaps more than any other country in the Middle East. The fact that 15 of the 19 suicide skyjackers were Saudi citizens provoked an avalanche of criticism in the West as well as in some parts of the Islamic and Arab world against Saudi religious beliefs, rulers, social customs, and school curricula. This article traces the Wahhabi Post-9/11 ideological …

It discusses the extent to which religion is practically involved in politics and governance by examining the mechanisms of domination, the actual relationships between religious scholars ('ulama') and rulers (umara'), and the means by which authority is actually implemented. The current Saudi regime, I would suggest, is best descri…
