Population shrinkage and cropland fragmentation in Northeastern China: Spatiotemporal associations and implications for land governance
Rural population decline and rapid ageing are reshaping agricultural regions, yet their implications for the reorganisation of agricultural land systems remain insufficiently understood. Focusing on Northeastern China, a major grain-producing region experiencing sustained out-migration and rural labour loss, we examine the relationship between population shrinkage and cropland fragmentation. Using demographic data and annual 30 m land-cover data …
Revisiting Urban Regime Theory in the Context of Contemporary China
Urban regime theory explains governing capacity through coalitions that mobilize resources beyond municipal authority, but it undertheorizes how such coalitions operate in vertically integrated party-states. Through a problem-driven critical synthesis, this article develops a China-centered framework organized around a recursive causal process. A structuring field combines mandates and accountability, inherited local resource ecologies, and terri…

Short-term associations between ambient air pollution and cardiovascular disease mortality: An 11-year time-series study in Nanning, China
Background Short-term exposure to ambient air pollution has been associated with cardiovascular disease (CVD) mortality, but localized evidence from subtropical cities in southwestern China remains limited. This 11-year time-series study aimed to evaluate the short-term associations between six criteria air pollutants and daily CVD mortality in Nanning, China. Methods We conducted a time-series analysis using daily data on CVD mortality, air poll…
The Ecological Transformation of Successful Intelligence: How High-Stakes Professional Contexts Reshape the Functional Architecture of the Triarchic Model
This conceptual integrative review and theoretical proposal investigates how the functional architecture of Sternberg’s Triarchic Theory of Intelligence is reconfigured when the framework is translocated from low-risk academic settings, in which analytical intelligence predominates, to high-stakes professional environments characterised by extreme cognitive load, temporal compression, irreversible consequences, and multicultural team dynamics. To…

Males collectively defend their one‐male units against bachelor males in a multi‐level primate society
Group-level male-male co-operation, which has been documented in several primate and non-primate societies, may be mutualistically advantageous to the participants when confronted with threats such as takeovers and cuckoldry by external males. Co-operation among members of distinct social units-while universal among humans-is extremely rare in non-human primates. We present the first observations of collective action or co-operation among males o…
