Understanding Self-Rated Health and Unconventional Oil and Gas Development in Three Colorado Communities
Domestic, onshore oil and gas production has increased substantially in the United States in the last ∼20 years, creating a range of positive and negative impacts on communities. In this paper, we add to the growing literature on unconventional oil and gas production (a.k.a., “fracking”) and well-being by evaluating the association between self-reported stress induced by local oil and gas development and subjective well-being in the form of self-…
It's not ideal: Reconsidering 'anger' and 'apathy' in the Brexit vote among an invisible working class
Media commentary has characterized the working class 'leave' voters in the UK's EU referendum in terms of anger, apathy and frustration. There have been very few genuine attempts to document and interpret the meaning of the 'leave' vote among underprivileged voters who seemed to have voted for an outcome that harms their own interests. This article explores accounts and narratives from working class 'leave' voters through an ethnographic study of…
The class politics of prejudice: Brexit and the land of no-hope and glory
The debates relating to social class and whether it is still a useful concept in describing a lived reality of the British population has never been far away from media, political and academic dispute. Thatcher's Britain throughout the 1980s attempted to dilute class meaning with what was called 'a home owning democracy' and thus end class collective politics through easily available credit for the working class while simultaneously attacking tra…

The Use of Health Impact Assessment for a Community Undergoing Natural Gas Development
The development of natural gas wells is rapidly increasing, yet little is known about associated exposures and potential public health consequences. We used health impact assessment (HIA) to provide decision-makers with information to promote public health at a time of rapid decision making for natural gas development. We have reported that natural gas development may expose local residents to air and water contamination, industrial noise and tra…
Narratives from a Nottingham council estate: A Story of White Working-Class Mothers With Mixed-Race Children
This paper introduces a group of white working-class women living on a council estate in the UK drawing on an ethnographic study conducted between 2005 and 2009, examining the impact of class inequality and a stigmatized living space in an ethnically diverse urban neighbourhood. All of the women are mothers and have mixed-race children; they reside on the St Ann's estate in Nottingham, an inner-city neighbourhood that has been subject to poor hou…
Fox-Trotting the Riot: Slow Rioting in Britain's Inner City
In recent years there have been significant discussions and arguments raised relating to the position and behaviour of those who live in Britain's poorest neighbourhoods, however there has been little in the way of solutions put forward by any of the political Party's. August 2011 was a flashpoint in the history of these debates, the civil unrest which took place during that month has led to further and continuous on-going social and political de…
A Narrative from the Inside, Studying St Anns in Nottingham: Belonging, Continuity and Change
This paper focuses upon the St Anns neighbourhood in Nottingham, a community first studied by Ken Coates and Bill Silburn in the 1960s which noted the great upheavals of the physical and social changes generated by the slum clearance programme of 10, 000 back-to-back terraced houses, and the consequent building of the concrete council estate that is now St Anns. This paper draws upon both the physical and the social changes within the neighbourho…
