Being Human in the Age of the Brain: Models of Mind and Their Social Effects
The shimmering gold image presented in ''Self Reflected'' is not a real brain slice, but it sure looks like one. The computer-generated, hyperreal work of art, developed with a technique called reflective microetching, is the creation of neuroscientist Greg Dunn and applied physicist Brian Edwards. Designed to reflect light differently from different angles as you walk around it, the installation is also animated by multicolored lights that scan …

Toward the Elimination of Subjectivity: From Francis Bacon to AI
Toward the Elimination of Subjectivity:From Francis Bacon to AI Joseph E. Davis (bio) we are living in a world being remade in the image of numbers. Everywhere we turn we encounter techniques and technologies of quantification and ubiquitous talk of algorithms, artificial intelligence (AI), metrics, audit, statistics, and more. They have become a part of the fabric of daily life and business, of economic and institutional routine. No domain or di…
Persons without Qualities: Algorithms, AI, and the Reshaping of Ourselves
Persons without Qualities:Algorithms, AI, and the Reshaping of Ourselves Joseph E. Davis (bio) and Paul Scherz (bio) an elegant couple walking down a busy thoroughfare comes across the scene of a traffic accident. A man, apparently dead, has been struck by a lorry. Seeing him through the crowd lying motionless on the ground, the woman experiences an "irresolute, paralyzing sensation." Her companion observes that such heavy trucks have too long a …

Medicalization
Medicalization is the designation for the social process by which a very wide range of life problems, behaviors, and emotional experiences, not previously defined as medical, have been descriptively transformed into disorders, illnesses, deficiencies, or targets of medical intervention. Explored by scholars in many fields, medicalization is a powerful process, propelled forward by cultural, political, and economic forces, and raising troubling is…
Identity and Social Change
Identity and Social Change examines the thorny problem of modern identity. Trenchant critiques have come from identity politics, focusing on the construction of difference and the solidarity of minorities, and from academic deconstructions of modern subjectivity. This volume places identity in a broader sociological context of destabilizing and reintegrating forces. The contributors first explore identity in light of economic changes, consumerism…

Didier Fassin and Richard Rechtman, The Empire of Trauma: An Inquiry into the Condition of Victimhood
O ver the past several decades, the concept of trauma has emerged as a powerful and ubiquitous model for expressing the painful memories and other suffering that arises from exposure to stressful events. As a clinical term, trauma has taken canonical form as the event that gives rise to posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD).Originally, PTSD was conceived as a psychological reaction to horrifying, usually life-threatening experiences, including comb…
Self and Social Change – By M. Adams
Adams, M. Self and Social Change Sage Publications 2007 189 pp. £60.00 (hardback) £19.99 (paperback) Throughout the postwar period in the West, social theorists have grappled with the problem of self/identity, both in terms of conflicts between individual needs and social demands and in light of significant and destabilizing social transformations. On the nature of the social changes wrought by modernity there is widespread agreement. While by no…
Children and Sexuality: From the Greeks to the Great War
Despite its title, this is principally a book about sexual abuse. In his preface, the editor, George Rousseau, argues that the book is an exploration of ‘children and their sexualities’ and offers ‘preliminary interpretations about children and their repertoires of sexual expression in history’. As such, he sees the book breaking new ground and representing a novel contribution to the emerging literature on the history of childhood. The case hist…

The Soul of Development: Biblical Christianity and Economic Transformation in Guatemala
Ever since Max Weber started an argument about the role of Protestantism in jump-starting northern Europe's economic development, scholars have clashed over the influence of religion and culture on a society's (or an individual's) economic prospects. Today, many wonder whether the explosion of Protestantism in Latin America will effect a similar wave of growth and democratization. In this book, Sherman compiles the results of her field study and …
Cultural Politics at the Edge of Life
To operate within a strictly political frame of reference, the dispute over abortion—the centerpiece of the controversy over reproduction and population control in America—would seem to be over. With the election of Bill Clinton to the presidency in 1992, many observers declared as much. Charles Krauthammer, for one, argued that “one can reasonably declare a great national debate over when all three independently (s)elected branches of government…

Satanic Panic: The Creation of a Contemporary Legend
Sociologist Victor began his involvement with satanic-cult phenomena by investigating a local panic centered in southwestern New York state. After an introductory section, his book begins with a description of this research, then proceeds with an excellent general review of recent fear about satanic cults in the U.S. He concludes that there is no evidence for the actual existence of organized satanic cults. -- Choice
Politics and the Catholic Church in Nicaragua
Guerrilla-priests and liberation theology are not new phenomena in Nicaragua. Ever since the arrival of the Spanish conquistadores, Catholic Church leaders have played a major role in that country's politics. The result, the author writes, is a polarized church, one with a progressive minority at loggerheads with the conservative hierarchy. Kirk sets each stage of the church-state debate in a historical continuum, then examines the 40-year period…

A vasectomy service in a free‐standing family planning center: One year's experience
The experience in establishing the first outpatient Vasectomy Service as an integral part of a family planning service in a center that has offered other family planning services for 50 years is summarized. The Vasectomy Service was opened in October 1969 at the Margaret Sanger Research Bureau Inc. Service was the primary objective. From the inception of the Vasectomy Service at the Bureau until June 30 1972 1426 procedures were performed. Analys…
A follow‐up study of the effects of vasectomy on sexual behavior
We have been studying the rate of disappearance of spermatozoa from the semen specimen after vasectomy and have reported a new and simple method of determining when aspermia exists (Freund and Davis, 1969a, 1969b, 1970). It seemed to us of interest to follow up the couples in our vasectomy series in order to determine what effects, if any, vasectomy had on their sexual activity and what their perception was of the influence of the operation. We w…
