  • San Bushman Human–Lion Transformation and the “Credulity of Others

    Open Access•Mathias Guenther•ARTICLE•Humans•2024•Referencias: 8

Lion transformation, among San-Bushmen, is arguably the most dramatic and spectacular instance of animal transformation. Transformation is a central component of San curing and initiation ritual and of certain San hunting practices. Moreover, it is a recurrent theme in San mythology, art and cosmology, all of them domains of San expressive and symbolic culture that are pervaded by ontological mutability (manifested most strikingly in the theriant…

  • The Politics of Egalitarianism

Megan Biesele, Karen Brodkin et al.•BOOK•Politics of Egalitarianism•2022

The essays assembled in this book exemplify the way political anthropologists address a range of problems that deeply affect people throughout the world. The authors draw their inspiration from the work of Canadian anthropologist Richard B. Lee, and, like him, they are concerned with understanding and acting upon issues of “indigenous rights”; the impact of colonialism, postcolonial state formation, and neoliberalism on local communities and cult…

  • Therianthropes in a Cartesian and an Animistic Cosmology

    Open Access•Mathias Guenther•ARTICLE•Literatura Ludowa•2022

The nature of human-animal hybrid beings (or therianthropes) is examined in an Animistic (traditional San Bushman) and a Cartesian (Early Modern Western) cosmology. In each ontological ambiguity is imagined and conceptualized in different terms. One of them is through monstrosity, which, in the Western schema, is equated with human-animal hybridity. This equivalence threatens the boundaries and categories that buttress western cosmology, through …

    Mathias Guenther•ARTICLE•Folklore•2020•Citada por: 4•Referencias: 10

Two myth texts were collected by the author from the Naro storyteller Qhomatcã in May 1995, on the motifs of ontological transformation and the equivalence of women and game. The animal featured in the two stories is the elephant, a species especially close in San myth and belief to humans, especially women. Transformation and woman–game conflation are both pan-San mythemes and premier manifestations of the cosmological theme of ontological mutab…

  • Therefore their parts resemble humans, for they feel that they are people

    Mathias Guenther•ARTICLE•Hunter Gatherer Research•2015•Citada por: 20•Referencias: 18

Despite resurrecting its central concept from one of the discipline’s Founding Fathers, the so-called ‘New Animism’ is very much a current branch of symbolic anthropology. With its focus on the rituals and beliefs and modes of thought specifically of simple hunters, hunter-gatherers, hunter-herders and hunter-horticulturalists, it is concerned with how humans conceive of their being in relation to non-human beings, in particular animals. Studies …

Like many other small-scale hunter-gatherers, the San (or Bushmen) of southern Africa have a vibrant oral culture and a society that is structurally loose. After first showing the multiple ways in which orality is manifest within the various institutional domains of San culture, the article examines the connection between orality and structural looseness. It is argued that, in playing itself out in San sociality, orality both underscores the loos…

In recent years artists from two San communities in Botswana and Namibia have been producing paintings and prints which have become sought after by Western collectors, as instances of African primitive art. The art is produced in a context of intense identity politics, which in recent years have awakened the San politically and placed this hitherto passive ethnic minority on a course of political action. The art is especially relevant to the issu…

In this paper I would like to recall this virtually universal mythological and folkloric figure back to our civilized memory. I will draw most of my information from a tribal culture, the Bushmen of southern Africa…

Wandering God is the third of a remarkable trilogy on the evolution and diversity of the patterns thought and consciousness of Homo sapiens through the ages. Their manifestation, in spirituality and corporeality, were the themes of the previous two books, respectively, The Reenchantment of the World (1981) and Coming to Our Senses (1989). What Berman deals with in the present book, with impressive intellectual scope and erudition, is the shift of…

One of the world's oldest continuing societies, the Ju/'hoansi, or Bushmen of the Kalahari Desert offer profound insights into what is fundamental to human existence. In the face of outside pressures that threaten the complete disruption of their communal way of life, the Ju/'hoansi find deep spiritual resources in their traditional healing dance. Their indigenous method of healing individuals is also a powerful affirmation of the community, and …

  • The Trance Dancer as an Agent of Social Change among the Farm Bushmen of the Ghanzi District

    Mathias Guenther

About two-thirds of the approximately 10 000 farm Bushmen (or San2) of the Ghanzi District have undergone quite extensive socio-cultural change as a result of contact with white (immigrants from South Africa) and black (Kgalagari, Herero and Tswana) ranchers who settled in the district around the turn of the century. This contact has been disruptive in a number of respects and has created what the local farmers and administrators refer to as the …

Cost-benefit models derived from evolutionary ecology have led to the general expectation that territoriality will be found where resources are most abundant and predictable. Literature sources for four Bushman groups, however, indicate that the most territorial of these groups are found where resources are sparsest and most variable.
