  • The Paleolithic in the Nihewan Basin, China: Evolutionary history of an Early to Late Pleistocene record in Eastern Asia

    Open Access•Shi-Xia Yang, Cheng‐long Deng et al.•ARTICLE•Evolutionary Anthropology Issues…•2020

The Nihewan Basin of China preserves one of the most important successions of Paleolithic archeological sites in Eurasia. Stratified archeological sites and mammalian fossils, first reported in the 1920s, continue to be recovered in large‐scale excavation projects. Here, we review key findings from archeological excavations in the Nihewan Basin ranging from ~1.66 Ma to 11.7 ka. We place particular emphasis on changes in stone tool technology over…

  • Magnetostratigraphic dating of the Shanshenmiaozui mammalian fauna in the Nihewan Basin, North China

Open Access•Ping Liu, Zhijun Wu et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary International•2016

  • Magnetochronological sequence of the Early Pleistocene Gigantopithecus faunas in Chongzuo, Guangxi, southern China

Open Access•Lu Sun, Yuan Wang et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary International•2014

  • Pleistocene environmental evolution in the Nihewan Basin and implication for early human colonization of North China

Open Access•Hong Ao, Chenglong Deng et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary International•2010

  • Timing of the Nihewan formation and faunas

Open Access•Chenglong Deng, Rixiang Zhu et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2008

Magnetostratigraphic dating of the fluvio-lacustrine sequence in the Nihewan Basin, North China, has permitted the precise timing of the basin infilling and associated Nihewan mammalian faunas. The combined evidence of new paleomagnetic findings from the Hongya and Huabaogou sections of the eastern Nihewan Basin and previously published magnetochronological data suggests that the Nihewan Formation records the tectono-sedimentary processes of the …

  • Early evidence of the genus Homo in East Asia

  • Magnetostratigraphic dating of the Donggutuo and Maliang Paleolithic sites in the Nihewan Basin, North China

Open Access•Hongqiang Wang, Chenglong Deng et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2005

A detailed magnetostratigraphic investigation, coupled with rock-magnetic studies, was carried out on a lacustrine sequence in the eastern Nihewan Basin, Northern China, which contains the Donggutuo and Maliang Paleolithic sites. Magnetite and hematite were identified as the main carriers for the characteristic remanent magnetizations. Magnetostratigraphic results show that the lacustrine sequence recorded the late Matuyama and Brunhes chrons. Fu…

Open Access•Rixiang Zhu, Zhaolong An et al.•ARTICLE•Earth-Science Reviews•2003

  • Onset of Asian desertification by 22 Myr ago inferred from loess deposits in China

    Open Access•Zhengtang Guo, Z T Guo et al.•ARTICLE•Nature•2002

  • Ice-Volume Forcing of East Asian Winter Monsoon Variations in the Past 800,000 Years

Open Access•Zhongli Ding, Tungsheng Liu et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•1995

Particle-size measurements of some typical loess-soil samples taken in different localities of the Chinese Loess Plateau demonstrate that the grain size ratio of 10 μm (%) can be used as an indicator of variations in intensity of the East Asian winter monsoon winds. Grain-size curves of the Baoji and Weinan sections show that this proxy indicator is very sensitive to loess-soil alterations. Analytical results also suggest that during soil-forming…
