Given its importance, symbolic cognition has been a major topic of interest in many academic disciplines including anthropology, archeology, and the cognitive sciences.1-6 Paleolithic rock art holds vast potential for understanding the early roots of symbolically mediated behavior.…

  • The Cambridge Companion to the Literature of the American South

    Open Access•Michael P Bibler, Kathryn B Mckee et al.•BOOK•Cambridge Companion to the…•2013

This Companion maps the dynamic literary landscape of the American South. From pre- and post-Civil War literature to modernist and civil rights fictions and writing by immigrants in the 'global' South of the late-twentieth and twenty-first centuries, these newly commissioned essays from leading scholars explore the region's established and emergent literary traditions. Touching on poetry and song, drama and screenwriting, key figures such as Will…

  • Very Young Children's Development in Moviemaking

John T Matthews, John Matthews•ARTICLE•Mind Culture and Activity•2006

In this study, I gave a group of six to eight very young Chinese Singaporean children (between 2 and 4 years of age) three identical digital video cameras, plus tripods, and tracked their development in moviemaking over a 2-year period. The children were allowed to explore the cameras freely, though the investigators offered advice and support as and when necessary. Before this study, I had made detailed longitudinal studies of British and Asian …

  • As I Lay Dying in the Machine Age

    Open Access•John T Matthews•CHAPTER•National Identities and…•1994

The cultural transformation marking the New South was structured by a central dialectic: the dynamic relation between modernization and modernism. Various plans to rejuvenate the South after World War I urged the adoption of modernized modes of production, including tenancy and credit reform for farmers; crop diversification; increased commodity consumption; technological improvements, such as electrification and mechanization; cooperatives for e…

  • The Governing Classes

    John T Matthews, John Matthews•CHAPTER•Western aristocracies and…•1990

To one visitor to Rome in the 380s, a gentleman officer and historian from Syrian Antioch, the tastes and behaviour of its upper-class residents presented a memorably unfavourable impression. In a pair of vivid satirical portraits, inserted as digressions into his history, Ammianus Marcellinus depicted the senators as totally unworthy of their traditions and social eminence as, sunk in leisure and frivolity, they devoted themselves to the pursuit…

  • East and West

    John T Matthews, John Matthews•CHAPTER•Western aristocracies and…•1990

In January 420 Fl. Constantius had entered office as consul for the third time. His second consulship, in 417, had been distinguished by his marriage to Galla Placidia; and now, close upon the completion of his third, came his elevation, on 8 February 421, to the rank of Augustus. At the same moment, his wife received the title Augusta, and their little son, Valentinian, became at under two years of age, ‘nobilissimus’. For the moment, the politi…
