  • High-resolution reconstruction of infiltration in the Southern Cook Islands based on trace elements in speleothems

Open Access•Mohammadali Faraji, Andrea Borsato et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2024

This study utilizes speleothem trace elements as climate proxies to reconstruct hydroclimate variability over approximately 350 years in the Southern Cook Islands. Stalagmites Pu17 and Pu4 from Pouatea cave were analyzed using high-resolution LA-ICP-MS for trace elements (Mg, Na, Sr, P, U, Y). By monitoring cave dripwater and conducting regression analysis, we found that Mg, Sr, and Na in Pouatea dripwater mostly originated from marine aerosols, …

  • The Polycrisis and the Centaur

    Open Access•Alan Greig•ARTICLE•Feminist Encounters A Journal of…•2024

The multiplicity of crises that mark the contemporary era, the polycrisis, also constitutes a crisis of hegemony. This article explores the functions of gendered racialisation in elite management of this hegemonic crisis, with reference to Gramsci’s use of the figure of the Centaur, a hybrid of humanity and animality. It discusses the ways in which this hybrid evokes racialising tropes of human bestiality to express the dynamic interplay of conse…

  • Patriarchal (Dis)orders

Jerker Edström, Alan Greig et al.•ARTICLE•Signs: Journal of Women in…•2024•Cited by: 13•References: 26

Amid a rising tide of misogyny and gender violence across the world, terms like “patriarchal backlash” have increased in use to describe similar trends in different settings. Yet, backlash remains contested as a concept, variably perceived as an expression of male resistance, a patriarchal restoration, or a mode through which a broader reactionary politics play out and coalesce. Recognizing that the predominance of recent academic literature on b…

  • Pathways between childhood trauma, intimate partner violence, and harsh parenting

Open Access•Emma Fulu, Stephanie Spaid Miedema et al.•ARTICLE•The Lancet Global Health•2017

BACKGROUND: Although childhood trauma and violence against women are global public health issues, few population-based data from low-income and middle-income countries exist about the links between them. We present data from the UN Multi-country Study on Men and Violence in Asia and the Pacific, exploring the pathways between different forms of childhood trauma and violence against women. METHODS: In this multicountry study, we interviewed multis…

  • Men and Development

Alan Greig, Andrea Cornwall et al.•BOOK•Men and Development•2011

A wide-ranging volume featuring contributions from some of today's leading thinkers and practitioners in the field of men, masculinities and development. Together, contributors challenge the neglect of the structural dimensions of patriarchal power relations in current development policy and practice, and the failure to adequately engage with the effects of inequitable sex and gender orders on both men's and women's lives. The book calls for rene…

  • Chemical Comparison of Rare Chinese White Pottery From Four Sites of the Erlitou State

Open Access•Baoping Li, Li Liu et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeometry•2010•Cited by: 1•References: 21

White pottery is among the most significant finds from China's earliest state, Erlitou ( c . 1900–1500 bc ). Samples were primarily discovered in small numbers from elite tombs of a few sites, leading to the hypothesis that they were made at only a few locations and then circulated regionally as prestige items. To facilitate determining provenances, we compare the ICP–MS trace elements and TIMS Sr isotopes of whiteware with two soil samples from …

  • Troublesome Masculinities

    Open Access•Alan Greig•ARTICLE•IDS Bulletin•2009•Cited by: 4•References: 6

This article explores the notion of troublesome' masculinities that characterise much of the policy discourse and programme thinking on problems of young men and gender. It critiques the dimorphism that shapes this view of young men's gender trouble, and the ‘culturalism’ that constrains the perception of the troubled times in which many young men live. The article argues that young men can be enlisted in the feminist struggle to transform ideolo…

  • High-resolution and Precisely dated record of weathering and hydrological dynamics recorded by manganese and rare-earth elements in a stalagmite from Central China

Open Access•Houyun Zhou, Baoquan Chi et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2008

Manganese (Mn) and rare-earth elements (REEs) in a stalagmite (SJ3) collected from Central China were analyzed, using an ICP-MS method for the precise determination of > 40 trace elements in geological samples by enriched-isotope internal standardization. Unlike speleothem Mn and REEs investigated by cathodoluminescence, which may be incorporated into crystal lattice, the Mn and REEs analyzed in SJ3 should come largely from colloidal and particle…

  • Gender and Aids

Alan Greig, Dean Peacock et al.•ARTICLE•AIDS•2008

Gender has long been recognized as being key to understanding and addressing HIV and AIDS. Gender roles and relations that structure and legitimate women's subordination and simultaneously foster models of masculinity that justify and reproduce men's dominance over women exacerbate the spread and impact of the epidemic. Notions of masculinity prevalent in many parts of the world that equate being a man with dominance over women, sexual conquest a…

  • The Spectacle of Men Fighting

    Open Access•Alan Greig•ARTICLE•IDS Bulletin•2000•Cited by: 3

Summaries The meaning of male violence should be a central concern of Gender and Development (GAD) discourse and practice. Explanations of the nature, and limits, of men's responsibility for such violence increasingly centre on their socialisation into a masculine identity. By counter?posing the ‘individual’ and the ‘social’, attention becomes fixed on identity as the surface that connects these two realities on which is inscribed the masculinity…
