Antisemitism and International Relations
This article examines the role of antisemitism in international politics. Drawing on a genealogy of European antisemitism, it proposes the analytic framework of the ‘enemy within’ to foreground instances when Jewish ‘enemy’ figures are positioned on both sides of the boundaries organising international political orders. This particular permutation of (racial) bordering is porous and ambivalent, even or especially as ‘hard’ and binary racial borde…
Transness as insecurity
This article analyses the security politics of opposition to trans rights in the United States and United Kingdom. It argues that opponents of ‘gender ideology’ view transness as a threat to reproductive ability and therefore as a threat to national, societal and/or racial reproduction. Anti-trans movements articulate reproductive dis/ability along lines of gender, age and race, with an overwhelming focus on (what they imagine as) white girls’ de…
From savages to snowflakes
Right-wing free speech advocacy is increasingly shaping global politics. In IR, free speech has generally been viewed within human rights and international legal frameworks. However, this article shows that contemporary free speech advocates often ignore or oppose human rights and international law, focusing instead on (what they describe as) a defence of the nation state against the enemies of free speech. This article examines this articulation…
The Settler Coloniality of Free Speech
Public and scholarly debates surrounding free speech often assume free speech is a public good and/or should be approached as a problem of 'drawing the line' between free and regulated or benign and harmful speech. In contrast, this article provides a genealogy of free speech in which liberal freedom of expression has, since its inception, been integral to white supremacist settler colonialism in the United Kingdom and its former settler colonies…
Teaching politics after the practice turn
The ‘practice turn’ and its associated ontology, epistemology and methodology are now well established in political research. In this article, we identify and explore a corollary pedagogy. After outlining the principal components of practice theory, we compare case- and placement-based approaches to learning, designed to develop skills for use in practice. We introduce and describe our own rather different course, which we designed to develop an …
Colonialism, Gender and the Family in North America
This paper explores the case for a feminist, gendered analysis of anti‐colonial Indigenous struggles in two stages: It considers the historical and contemporary relationship between colonialism and gender, moving from pre‐colonial Indigenous life through colonisation and assimilation to explore Indigenous life today. It then discusses the problems and possibilities that the intersection of colonial power and gender presents for Indigenous struggl…
