From childhood malnutrition to adult mental illness: Covid-19 and the hidden legacy of malnutrition
INTRODUCTION: The impact of stunting, thinness and obesity on depression and anxiety during challenging times, such as COVID-19, has not been adequately explored. This study aimed to estimate these relationships using longitudinal data from the four countries: Ethiopia, India, Peru and Vietnam. METHODS: We conducted an analysis using data from the Younger Cohort of the Young Lives study, which tracked 8000 children from 2002 to 2021. The first fi…
Double and triple burden of malnutrition and the role of geo-socio-ecological factors in Ethiopia: A bayesian geostatistical analysis
The present finding shows that Ethiopia is experiencing both a double and triple burden of malnutrition, with a significant overlap of overweight/obesity, stunting, and micronutrient deficiencies (i.e. triple burden) across the country. This highlights the need for geographically targeted integration of services that address all forms of malnutrition. The Diphtheria Tetanus Pertussis (DTP) vaccine was negatively associated with stunting and VAD, …
Modulating HIF-1α/HIF-2α homeostasis with Shen-Qi-Huo-Xue formula alleviates tubular ferroptosis and epithelial-mesenchymal transition in diabetic kidney disease
Universal secondary education, schooling and women ’s empowerment: Evidence from Uganda
We evaluate the long-term effects of Uganda’s 2007 Universal Secondary Education (USE) policy, which expanded secondary education access through tuition-fee elimination and increased school capacity. Using a difference-in-differences approach, we exploit variations in birth cohorts and regional exposure to identify the policy’s causal impacts on women’s educational attainment and empowerment. Our results show significant gains in education and em…
Child stunting, thinness, and their academic performance in Ethiopia: A longitudinal study
Our findings indicate that stunting is significantly negatively associated with child academic performance (PPVT and math scores), after adjusting for child, household, and parental socio-demographic factors, location, and prior academic performance. To improve the intellectual capabilities and human capital of future generations, policy measures in Ethiopia should prioritize addressing childhood thinness and stunting
The anticonvulsant effect of saiga horn on febrile seizures by regulating brain serotonin content and inhibiting neuroinflammation
Echo Effects of Health Shocks: The Intergenerational Consequences of Prenatal and Early-Life Malnutrition during the Great Leap Forward Famine in China
Relatively few studies have examined the ‘echo effect’ of health shocks related to prenatal and early-life malnutrition, that is, whether the legacy of such shocks is transmitted to the next generation. This study addresses this gap by leveraging extreme malnutrition during the Great Leap Forward famine in China, and by examining its intergenerational consequences. Using a difference-in-differences framework, we estimate the effect of the famine …
