Removing or returning freedom? Views on a nicotine-free generation policy held by young people from aotearoa who use electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS)
Although participants thought a nicotine-free generation could impose personal hardship, most privileged the freedom they thought it could bring over the illusory 'choice' they currently had. Policy-makers should consider looking beyond a smokefree generation to a nicotine-free generation; alongside this measure, they should implement strong enforcement and provide comprehensive support so young people addicted to nicotine can be empowered to sto…
Understanding youth drinking decline
‘You just wanna hit it … ‘cause like it smells like fun’
To inform public policy and practice, we investigated how adolescents experience and perceive nicotine vaping. Young people have the right to be heard on this issue, and policies that respond to youth perspectives are likely to be more effective. Most of our 14–17‐year‐old participants ( N = 64) did not currently vape and abstinence was an active choice associated with family values, religious beliefs, and the perceived risks vaping posed to iden…
Lived experiences of stigma and altered self-perceptions among young people who are addicted to ENDS
We extend earlier studies by probing the mental health burden ENDS use imposes on young people, offer new insights into how they experience addiction and outline potential policy responses. Measures reducing young people's access to ENDS are urgently needed alongside empathetic, youth-oriented cessation support
Trends and the Gender Gap in the Reporting of Sexual Initiation Among 15-Year-Olds
Early sexual intercourse initiation has been associated with immediate and long-term risks, which makes the study of trends in sexual initiation an important topic for policy makers. This study investigated trends over time in reported sexual initiation among 15-year-olds across 33 countries between 2010-2018. In addition, we examined if there were cross-country differences in the gender gap in reported sexual initiation in 2018, and whether thes…
Early‐onset smoking and vaping of cannabis
Less drinking, less harm
Adolescent alcohol use has declined in many high‐income countries, yet few studies have measured the impact on alcohol harm. We investigated whether declines in alcohol use among secondary school students in Aotearoa New Zealand were accompanied by declines in self‐reported alcohol harm. We used data from the Youth2000 survey series (2007, N = 9098; 2012, N = 8487; 2019, N = 7311). We found alcohol use declined substantially on all indicators (li…
The great decline in adolescent risk behaviours
In many high-income countries, the proportion of adolescents who smoke, drink, or engage in other risk behaviours has declined markedly over the past 25 years. We illustrate this behavioural shift by collating and presenting previously published data (1990-2019) on smoking, alcohol use, cannabis use, early sexual initiation and juvenile crime in Australia, England, the Netherlands, New Zealand, and the USA, also providing European averages where …
Has increasing internet use due to smartphone uptake contributed to the decline in adolescent smoking
How do New Zealand youth perceive the smoke-free generation policy? A qualitative analysis
Young people's deep reflection on the SFG led most to view it as liberating rather than restrictive. Communications that avoid prompting heuristic-based responses could encourage youth to reflect on the policy and elicit strong support from the group the SFG aims to benefit
The activity gap in Aotearoa New Zealand
The disparity in young people's access to extracurricular activities, known as the activity gap, remains largely unexplored in Aotearoa New Zealand. In this qualitative study we aimed to identify barriers to accessing activities and potential solutions. We interviewed 12 key informants between December 2021 to February 2022 with experience in providing extracurricular activities or relevant academic or policy‐making expertise. Participants identi…
What explains the decline in adolescent binge-drinking in New Zealand
Smoking as an ‘informed choice’
Informed choice' arguments allow the ubiquitous availability of tobacco to go unquestioned and create a tension between endgame goals and the strategies used to achieve these. Reducing tobacco availability would address this anomaly by aligning government's actions with its advice
Building community resilience
Internationally, enhancing community resilience is considered key to disaster management. Factors that affect community resilience from a community perspective are explored across six communities. The research occurred following a series of devastating earthquakes in the Canterbury region of New Zealand. Results show that connected communities with pre‐existing community infrastructure (e.g. community and tribal organisations, local leaders) foun…
