  • Problem of Job: An Eastern Response

Open Access•Samuel Laeuchli, Arvind Sharma•ARTICLE•Arc The Journal of the School of…•1994

The Book of Job is one of the best-known of the Bible. This paper brings an Eastern perspective to bear on it by exploring what might be the cen tral focus of the book.By adopting a comparative perspective and exam ining Job in relation to various Hindu and Buddhist texts, we argue that a koan-like theme of the "relevance of irrelevance" is at the root of Job's experience.Any attempt at a comparative exegesis of Job runs the risk of foun dering in…

  • Origen's Interpretation of Judas Iscariot

    Open Access•Samuel Laeuchli•ARTICLE•Church History•1953

The post-apostolic generation was not interested in the person who, according to all four gospels, betrayed Jesus the day before his death. This whole episode remained a rather dark spot for the young church, which was in constant self-defence against the manifold powers of the pagan world. It is not astonishing, therefore, that the apologetic literature of the second century carefully avoided this subject. The Judas legend, developing more and m…

  • The Polarity of the Gospels in the Exegesis of Origen

    Open Access•Samuel Laeuchli•ARTICLE•Church History•1952•References: 1

In spite of all the hermeneutic research, the allegorizing of the Alexandrians, and above all the exegetical work of Origen, remains a strange phenomenon of the early church. Historians have often smiled indulgently, if they have not scoffed, at those childhood steps of biblical interpretation within ancient Christian theology, from Thomasius more than a century ago up to our present. The possibility of a complete understanding is hindered by the…
