Iowa spatial accessibility to screening mammography is improving, but utilization among privately insured women remains stable, 2016–2022
Multilevel factors associated with overweight and obesity in East Africa
Labor & delivery unit closures most impact travel times to birth locations for micropolitan residents in Iowa
PURPOSE: Continued closure of rural hospitals and labor & delivery units can impact timely access to care. Iowa has lost over a quarter of its labor & delivery units in the previous decade. Calculating how travel times to labor & delivery services have changed, and where in the state the largest travel times take place, are important for understanding access to this critical service. METHODS: Using parental address and facility location from birt…

Individual, household and neighborhood risk factors for malaria in the Democratic Republic of the Congo support new approaches to programmatic intervention
Pigs in Space
Given the primacy of Iowa in pork production for the U.S. and global markets, we sought to understand if the same relationship with traditional environmental justice (EJ) variables such as low income and minority populations observed in other concentrated animal feeding operation (CAFO) studies exists in the relationship with swine CAFO densities in Iowa. We examined the potential for spatial clustering of swine CAFOs in certain parts of the stat…
Predicting Avian Influenza Co-Infection with H5N1 and H9N2 in Northern Egypt
Human outbreaks with avian influenza have been, so far, constrained by poor viral adaptation to non-avian hosts. This could be overcome via co-infection, whereby two strains share genetic material, allowing new hybrid strains to emerge. Identifying areas where co-infection is most likely can help target spaces for increased surveillance. Ecological niche modeling using remotely-sensed data can be used for this purpose. H5N1 and H9N2 influenza sub…
Changing spatial patterns and increasing rurality of HIV prevalence in the Democratic Republic of the Congo between 2007 and 2013
The geography of malaria genetics in the Democratic Republic of Congo
Disease Maps
While it is impossible to know the origin or existence of the first disease map, the power of such maps today is inestimable. In his excellent book, Disease Maps: Epidemics on the Ground, Tom Koch
Protective Benefits of Deep Tube Wells Against Childhood Diarrhea in Matlab, Bangladesh
Objectives. We investigated whether deep tube wells installed to provide arsenic-free groundwater in rural Bangladesh have the added benefit of reducing childhood diarrheal disease incidence. Methods. We recorded cases of diarrhea in children younger than 5 years in 142 villages of Matlab, Bangladesh, during monthly community health surveys in 2005 and 2006. We surveyed the location and depth of 12 018 tube wells and integrated these data with di…
Genetics
The emergence and re-emergence of human pathogens resistant to medical treatment will present a challenge to the international public health community in the coming decades. Geography is uniquely positioned to examine the progressive evolution of pathogens across space and through time, and to link molecular change to interactions between population and environmental drivers. Landscape as an organizing principle for the integration of natural and…
Highly Pathogenic H5N1 Avian Influenza Viruses Exhibit Few Barriers to Gene Flow in Vietnam
Population-environment drivers of H5N1 avian influenza molecular change in Vietnam
