  • Bank on It: How Bank Account Access Enhances the Effectiveness of Financial Literacy Programs in Pakistan: A Quasi‐Experimental Evaluation

Open Access•Awais Farid Khan, Andreas Chai et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Consumer Affairs•2026

While the experiential learning approach effectively improves financial literacy in developed countries, its applicability in developing countries faces resource constraints. However, expanding banking access in developing countries may enhance traditional financial education programs by enabling the practical application of learned financial concepts. Using a quasi‐experimental design, we examine this hypothesis by evaluating the impact of Pakis…

  • Gender Differentiated Impacts of Rural Advisory Services on Household and Child Nutrition

Open Access•Kwabena Nyarko Addai, Md Sayed Iftekhar et al.•ARTICLE•Social Indicators Research•2025•References: 5

Gender-based inequalities in agriculture hinder the sector's ability to provide nutritious diets and improve nutritional outcomes, as rural advisory services (RAS) have not equally benefited male and female farmers. We causally decompose household food and child nutrition outcomes across male- and female-headed households based on their access to RAS. We use data from the World Bank's Integrated Household Panel Survey in Malawi for the period 201…

  • Loneliness during the Covid-19 pandemic: Evidence from five European countries

Open Access•Alessio Rebechi, Anthony Lepinteur et al.•ARTICLE•Economics & Human Biology•2024

We use quarterly panel data from the COME-HERE survey covering five European countries to analyse three facets of the experience of loneliness during the COVID-19 pandemic. First, in terms of prevalence, loneliness peaked in April 2020, followed by a U-shape pattern in the rest of 2020, and then remained relatively stable throughout 2021 and 2022. We then establish the individual determinants of loneliness and compare them to those found in the l…

  • Multigenerational inequalities of opportunity in health outcomes

    Open Access•Namal N Balasooriya, Jayatilleke S Bandara et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal for Equity…•2024

This paper studies multigenerational health transmission mechanisms in Australian panel data. Using inequality-of-opportunity (IOP) models, we demonstrate that grandparental socioeconomic status (SES) is an important determinant of personal health, even after controlling for health and SES at the parental level. Our findings hold over a range of health/biomarkers of individuals' physical and mental well-being and appear to be especially sensitive…

  • Economic Disparities, Life Events, and the Gender Mental Health Gap

    Open Access•Thi Thao Nguyen, Kim‐Huong Nguyen et al.•ARTICLE•Social Indicators Research•2024•References: 11

This paper studies factors explaining the gender mental health gap using Australian data. We show that men have significantly higher mean outcomes and the left tail of the combined distribution is disproportionately female. Using regression-based decompositions, we examine the degree that both socioeconomic inequalities and life experience account for this phenomenon. We find that disparities in income play a substantial role, and subject to an a…

  • Remittance flows and informal economies in post‐Soviet transition countries

    Open Access•Jakhongir Kakhkharov, Nicholas Rohde•ARTICLE•World Economy•2023

This paper studies the impact of remittance flows on the size of informal economies in post‐Soviet countries. We compile a unique data set from a cluster of transition economies and use panel data econometric models to estimate effect sizes. Identification comes from varying macroeconomic conditions in Russia, which are plausibly exogenous to currency demand in remittance–recipient countries. Our estimates indicate that, across our models, it see…

  • Student satisfaction and online teaching

Ross Guest, Nicholas Rohde et al.•ARTICLE•Assessment & Evaluation in Higher…•2018

This paper presents an analysis of the response of student satisfaction scores to online delivery for courses at a large Australian university. Taking data from 2653 courses delivered since 2011 we employ a difference-in-differences estimator approach to evaluate the impact of a transition from face-to-face learning to online learning of courses on student satisfaction. We estimate that, on a five-point scale, conversion to online learning lowers…
