A Temporal and Spatial Analysis of the Covid-19 Epidemic in China
The COVID-19 epidemic, which broke out in the city of Wuhan, Province of Hubei, China in late 2019, was finally over in 2023, after almost four years. The objective of this study is to summarise the history of the evolution of this epidemic in China, over both time and space, with the focus on the cumulative population infection rates, the cumulative population death rates (adjusted for possible “excess deaths” as necessary), and the cumulative m…
Examining sources of language production switch costs amongst Tibetan-Chinese-English trilinguals
The present study tested whether the switch costs of production-based language switching tasks by trilinguals are due to competition from outside language schemas or from within language systems. We recruited 90 Tibetan-Chinese-English trilinguals in 10th grade in a Tibetan middle school in China to name digits and number words using different stimuli valence. The study was divided into three experiments, one for each combination of two languages…
Examining non-task language effect on production-based language switching
Aims and objectives/purpose/research questions: This study examined the non-task language effect in production-based language switching tasks by trilinguals using two of their languages. Non-task language refers to one of the languages of the trilinguals that is not used in a two-language switching task. Design/methodology/approach: Tibetan-Chinese-English participants (11th-grade high school students with a median age of 17) were recruited to pe…
Non-Parental Childcare Services and Time Allocation of Mothers with Young Children in China
This study explores the impact of access to and affordability of paid and unpaid childcare services on the time allocation of mothers with children ages 0–6. The study employs a fixed-effect seemingly unrelated regression model on longitudinal data from the China Health and Nutrition Survey for 2004–11, when women’s employment in China was declining rapidly. The study finds that holding constant other determinants, doubling daily wages of nannies…
An International Comparison of the Covid-19 Experiences of the Group-of-Seven and the BRICS Countries
The COVID-19 pandemic has been around since December 2019. In this study, the experiences of the Group-of-Seven Countries (G-7 — Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the UK and the US) and the BRICS Countries (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa) are compared in terms of the numbers of confirmed cases and deaths and the infection and mortality rates. The objective is to see whether such a comparison may yield some insight on how and w…
Country performance against Covid-19
OBJECTIVE: To generate rankings of 35 countries from all continents (except Africa) on performance against COVID-19. DESIGN: International time series, cross-sectional analysis. SELECTED COUNTRIES: Countries having 5500 or more cases (collectively including 85% of the world's cases) as of 16 April 2020 and that had reached 135 days into their pandemic by 30 July. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: performance rankings based on doubling time in days of the to…

The End of Cheap Chinese Labor
In recent decades, cheap labor has played a central role in the Chinese model, which has relied on expanded participation in world trade as a main driver of growth. At the beginning of China's economic reforms in 1978, the annual wage of a Chinese urban worker was only $1,004 in U.S. dollars. The Chinese wage was only 3 percent of the average U.S. wage at that time, and it was also significantly lower than the wages in neighboring Asian countries…
