  • The “dreaded” daughter-in-law in Australian farm business succession

Open Access•Lucie Newsome, Alison Sheridan et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Rural Studies•2024•Cited by: 3•References: 27

Egalitarian gender norms and legislative rights to property may be a threat to the successful intergenerational transfer of the family farm. This article examines how the land holding generation perceives the role of daughters-in-law in reproducing the family farm. We examine the site of farm succession and intergenerational transfer. We draw on interviews with 22 farm succession professionals. Our analysis demonstrates the land holding generatio…

  • Changing scripts

Open Access•Alison Sheridan, Lucie Newsome et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Rural Studies•2023•Cited by: 6•References: 13

In this paper we explore contemporary farm succession processes in Australia, with a particular focus on understanding how changing gender norms and increasing asset values may be impacting common patterns of farm ownership. We describe how social scripts inflect traditional patterns of farm succession and review what makes up a ‘family farm’, the changing economic environment in which family farms operate and take a deeper look at the traditiona…

  • Value-for-money assessment of social spending in developing countries

    Open Access•Jamelia Harris, Andrew Lawson•ARTICLE•Development in Practice•2022•References: 4

This practice note combines key theoretical principles of value-for-money (VfM) assessment with the authors’ experiences of conducting these studies in the health and agriculture sectors in Ethiopia. It documents an innovative approach to VfM analysis in contexts where data is limited. The approach combines quantitative and qualitative methods, can be easily applied to policy-relevant questions, and is simple and easily reproducible in developing…

  • Association between Neighborhood Social Deprivation and Stage at Diagnosis among Breast Cancer Patients in South Carolina

Open Access•Oluwole Adeyemi Babatunde, Whitney E Zahnd et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2021

The purpose of this study was to examine the association between neighborhood social deprivation and individual-level characteristics on breast cancer staging in African American and white breast cancer patients. We established a retrospective cohort of patients with breast cancer diagnosed from 1996 to 2015 using the South Carolina Central Cancer Registry. We abstracted sociodemographic and clinical variables from the registry and linked these d…

Open Access•Anna Lawson, Andrew Lawson et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2020

We propose a general approach to the analysis of multivariate health outcome data where geo-coding at different spatial scales is available. We propose multiscale joint models which address the links between individual outcomes and also allow for correlation between areas. The models are highly novel in that they exploit survey data to provide multiscale estimates of the prevalences in small areas for a range of disease outcomes. Results The mode…

  • Spatial Environmental Modeling of Autoantibody Outcomes among an African American Population

Open Access•Rachel Carroll, Anna Lawson et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2014

In this study of autoimmunity among a population of Gullah African Americans in South Carolina, the links between environmental exposures and autoimmunity (presence of antinuclear antibodies (ANA)) have been assessed. The study population included patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (n = 10), their first degree relatives (n = 61), and unrelated controls (n = 9) where 47.5% (n = 38) were ANA positive. This paper presents the methodology use…

  • A Bayesian analysis of the spatial concentration of individual wealth in the US North during the nineteenth century

Open Access•Alice Bee Kasakoff, Alice Kasakoff et al.•ARTICLE•Demographic Research•2014•Cited by: 4

Kin effects can be difficult to distinguish from those of spatial proximity, since kin tend to live close to each other. Thus, past research showing correlations between the wealth of relatives may be showing the effects of proximity and shared locations

  • Respiratory symptoms and lung function 8–10 months after community exposure to chlorine gas

Open Access•Kathleen A Clark, Debjani Chanda et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2013

Eight to ten months after acute chlorine exposure, the Graniteville health screening participants under-reported respiratory symptoms when compared to abnormal spirometry results. Sensitivity and specificity were low, and we determined that relying upon the self-report questionnaire was not adequate to objectively assess the lung health of our population following irritant gas exposure

  • An Emotional History of the Business Cycle

Anna Lawson, Andrew Lawson•ARTICLE•Journal of Cultural Economy•2013•References: 16

This article explores the homology between states of affect as represented in literary texts by Emerson, Poe, and Alcott, and the stages of the business cycle of 1832–1842. It argues that recurrent cycles of mania, panic, and depression served to habituate Americans to the business cycle and to naturalize market forces

This article explores the parallels between the narrative tropes of Moby-Dick and the conduct of the Mexican War of 1846–48. Drawing on the theories of Austin and Butler, the article develops an account of the performative speech acts deployed by President James K. Polk in order to secure Congressional support for the war, and the rhetorical power exercised by Ahab on the Pequod. It also examines in detail Melville’s use of the Biblical figures o…

  • William Faulkner

    Anna Lawson, Andrew Lawson•ARTICLE•Historical Materialism•2011

This review-essay explores the theoretical and methodological innovations of Richard Godden’s William Faulkner, arguing that it makes a signal contribution to historical materialism in literary studies. The article focuses on Godden’s concept of ‘generative structure’, and relates the term to earlier usages by Aglietta and Jameson. After summarising the close readings of Faulkner’s texts performed by Godden, the article suggests an expanded rôle …
