Between the Covers, into the World
Edmond de Montalk’s (1836-1901) reading diary captures a range of Francophone books and periodicals flowing out through cultural and social networks in nineteenth-century colonial New Zealand, revealing a part of the country’s multicultural history. A rare and valuable reading legacy, his diary illuminates what was actually read by an individual and documents his reading practices – titles, authors, dates of publication and publishers, brief comm…
An opportunity to sleep well in hospital
Improving sleep in hospital requires a whole-systems approach which targets environmental factors, staff behaviour, and patient behaviour. We have provided recommendations for a multi-level intervention, highlighting core areas for change and essential stakeholders who must be involved to progress implementation. The next stage of development will involve operationalising recommendations and piloting, including evaluating mechanisms of change. It…
In risk we trust? Making decisions about knee replacement
Risk communication is a key legal and ethical component of shared decision-making. Decisions about total knee replacement, a common surgery, must contend with the fact that a minority of cases result in unintended outcomes, some of which have devastating effects. To understand how risks are communicated during decision-making, we audio-recorded and analysed 62 consultations between surgeons and patients. Various communication methods were evident…
A cross‐sectional analysis of factors associated with stress, burnout and turnover intention among healthcare workers during the Covid‐19 pandemic in the United States
In 2020, healthcare workers faced the COVID-19 pandemic amidst other salient sociopolitical stressors. This study, therefore, set out to examine associations between personal, work-related and contextual factors and three outcomes - stress, burnout and turnover intention - at a critical juncture in the pandemic. In December 2020, we recruited a broad array of healthcare workers (n = 985) in a public safety net healthcare system serving socially a…
Self-recognition of trauma-related psychopathology and help-seeking among resettled Iraqi refugees in Australia
The current study sought to examine resettled Iraqi refugees' recognition of trauma-related psychopathology and the association between recognition and help-seeking. Participants were 66 men and women aged 18 to 70 years with clinically significant symptoms of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) recruited from a larger, community-based sample in Western Sydney, Australia. Participants were presented with a vignette of a fictional character who h…
Conceptualising time before surgery
Interpretations of time underlie patients' experiences of illness and the way in which the National Health Service (NHS) is organised. In the NHS, achieving short waiting times for treatment is seen as important, and this is particularly evident in relation to chronic conditions where the time waiting in care from onset of symptoms to successful management can last months and years. One example of a chronic condition with high prevalence is osteo…
Costs of providing dental services to adult mentally retarded
This study reports on the hourly costs of providing comprehensive dental services to mentally retarded adults in a hospital-based group dental practice. The analysis indicated average total hourly costs of $56.11 for dentist-provided services an $22.25 for dental hygienist-provided services. When compared to the revenues available for program maintenance, a net hourly deficit of $18.82 per dentist hour and $9.89 per dental hygienist hour resulted…
