  • The public health response to the re-emergence of syphilis in Wales, UK

    Open Access•Emerson W Pugh, D Rh Thomas et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of STD & AIDS•2011

During the 1990s, cases of infectious syphilis were uncommon in Wales. In 2002, an outbreak occurred in a sexual network of men who have sex with men (MSM) attending a sauna. A multidisciplinary outbreak control team was convened to raise awareness of the outbreak among MSM and health professionals, assess the extent of outbreak, and initiate surveillance measures. It is likely that early intensive control efforts dampened the epidemic curve. How…

  • Identifying outbreaks of sexually transmitted infection

    Open Access•Dirk Werber, M R Evans et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2006

Prompt identification and coordinated investigation of outbreaks, usually through a multidisciplinary outbreak control team, is central to the control of many infectious diseases. This does not appear to be the case for STIs, which we believe represents a lost opportunity to reduce transmission. Besides improved surveillance methods, a change in culture towards STI outbreaks is needed among health professionals in Wales

  • Hepatitis B immunisation of household contacts

Gabriele Richardson, M R Evans et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Epidemiology and…•2001

The United Kingdom has a policy of selective hepatitis B immunisation of people at high risk of infection including sexual or close household contacts of a case or carrier of hepatitis B, and babies born to infected mothers. 1 2 Risk of progression to chronic hepatitis B disease is greatest among infants infected at birth (90%), and children infected between ages 1-5 years (25-50%). We investigated whether the UK policy is being eVectively implem…

  • Use of sequential case-control studies to investigate a community Salmonella outbreak in Wales

    L J Llewellyn, Lynda Llewellyn et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Epidemiology and…•1998•References: 12

STUDY OBJECTIVE: To establish the source of a community outbreak of Salmonella typhimurium definitive type 124. DESIGN: Two stage case-control study. SETTING: Three districts in south east Wales. SUBJECTS: Cases of salmonella food poisoning and community controls. MAIN RESULTS: An initial case-control study identified an association between illness and eating ham (odds ratio 4.50, 95% confidence intervals 1.10, 21.8) and also found a possible ass…

  • Potential for laboratory exposures to biohazardous agents found in blood

    M R Evans, Marguerite Evans et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•1990•References: 10

The magnitude of risk for occupational exposures to biohazardous agents found in blood was assessed by 800 environmental samples taken from a total of 10 clinical and research laboratories at the National Institutes of Health (NIH). Thirty-one samples from 11 work stations in three laboratories contained hepatitis B virus surface antigen (HBsAg). Observations of workers indicated that environmental contamination arose from several sources. Among …

  • A note on the measurement of Sahlins' social profile of domestic production 1

    Open Access•M R Evans, Martin Evans•ARTICLE•American Ethnologist•1974•Cited by: 9

Sahlins' quantitative approach to production in primitive societies, based on a comparison of the observed relation between production per worker and proportion of consumers to workers in households with a hypothetical “Chayanov” relation (representing production for livelihood), is examlned. Changes in the type of measurement made are suggested which allow the degree of divergence of the empirical production pattern from the Chayanov pattern to …
