  • Assessing and Optimizing Urban Dynamic Resilience to Extreme Rainfall from Shock to Recovery

Open Access•Linmei Zhuang, Ming Wang et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of Disaster…•2026

Climate change has intensified extreme rainfall events, challenging progress toward SDG 11’s urban resilience targets. Current assessment methods often neglect dynamic recovery processes and regional precipitation disparities. We propose a three-phase framework combining interpretable machine learning (ML) and factorial experiments, using the Prep_shock index that integrates standardized rainfall intensity, capital exposure, and historical probab…

  • Assessment and Mapping of Extreme Ice Accretion Damage on Electricity Infrastructure Due to Freezing Rain in China

Open Access•Junfei Liu, Ming Wang et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of Disaster…•2026

Extreme weather events, particularly freezing rain (FR), pose significant threats to electricity infrastructure through ice accretion on transmission lines and towers. This study conducted a comprehensive national-scale assessment of FR impacts on China’s electricity infrastructure using an enhanced methodological framework. We integrated high-resolution (0.1°) gridded FR data spanning 2000–2019 with infrastructure data from OpenStreetMap, develo…

  • Global patterns of reservoir sedimentation and overlooked risks in small reservoirs

Open Access•Kai Liu, Chenyu Fan et al.•ARTICLE•Nature Sustainability•2026

Reservoir sedimentation is an escalating threat to global water security. While most existing assessments focus on large, well-managed reservoirs, they overlook the vast and vulnerable network of smaller reservoirs, which hampers our understanding of global sedimentation risks. Here we present a high-resolution global assessment of reservoir sedimentation in over 550,000 reservoirs, ~95% of which are <1 km2, based on a physics-guided machine lear…

  • Global burden and trends of non-communicable diseases among children and adolescents from 1990 to 2021

Open Access•Ying Chen, Yudan Long et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Public Health•2026

Background Comprehensive analyses of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) in children and adolescents that disentangle age, period, and cohort effects, assess health system efficiency, and project future trends remain limited. This study aims to address these gaps using data from the Global Burden of Disease Study 2021. Methods Utilizing data from GBD 2021, we analyzed age-standardized rates (ASRs) of prevalence, incidence, mortality, and disability-…

  • Complex network-based detection and forecasting of high-intensity tropical cyclones

Open Access•Ziyu Jiang, Kaiwen Li et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of Disaster…•2026

Accurate detection and forecasting of tropical cyclone tracks using limited climate variables and data is challenging. Here, we propose an innovative time-evolving complex network approach for detecting and forecasting high-intensity tropical cyclones (HITCs) based on mean sea level pressure and relative vorticity at 850 hPa. This approach enables us to successfully reproduce the tracks of HITCs of the Western North Pacific, achieving a mean dete…

  • Quantitative evaluation and resource optimization strategy for ancient and notable trees conservation efficacy

Open Access•Kai Liu, Shouqiang Wang et al.•ARTICLE•Trees Forests and People•2026

To address the lack of a quantitative assessment framework for evaluating the conservation efficacy of ancient and notable trees, as well as the absence of a scientific basis for optimal resource allocation, this study developed an evaluation model based on the “Tree-Environment-Human” triad criterion framework. The model was applied to assess the conservation efficacy of 71,578 ancient and notable trees in Sichuan Province, and resource optimisa…

  • Development of main effect DIF and interactive DIF detection method in cognitive diagnosis assessments

    Kai Liu, Z Y Guo et al.•ARTICLE•Acta Psychologica Sinica•2026

  • Developmental trajectories of vocabulary and logical thinking skills across adolescence

Open Access•Shuyan Mei, Kai Liu et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2026

Adolescence is a critical developmental period characterized by rapid neurobiological maturation and substantial changes in higher-order abilities, including vocabulary and logical thinking. Although prior research has documented general age-related improvements in these abilities, most studies have relied on cross-sectional or variable-centered designs, limiting insight into developmental heterogeneity and obscuring distinct developmental trajec…

  • A Survey of the Problem of Unbalanced High School Educational Resource Allocation within the County Region in Gansu Province—Using Seven High Schools in Three Counties as an Example

Open Access•Kai Liu, Liu Kai et al.•ARTICLE•Chinese Education & Society•2015

The imbalance in allocating high school educational resources within the county region has expanded the imbalances in local high school educational development. This has caused “diseconomies of scale” in high schools, aggravated the “expansion impulse” in building model high schools, limited the growth of effective demand by families for high school education, and restricted the expansion of the size of overall local high schools. Therefore, bala…
